Oft, class man. Toyed with the idea of getting my AO refinished in charcoal frost at Rexter. He suggested over the sunburst, I’ve been humming and hawing ever since man.. Yours gives me food for thought defo.

and here it is today, 4 years and 250-some-odd gigs later:

I was surprised to see how that old poly finish wears off.

chips on the upper bout are there because I play brass picks almost exclusively.

Your memory is very good indeed! :)

So this guitar initially had a stripped '61 Ash body when I first got it...I really wanted a black Jazzmaster at the time, and couldn't bring myself to cover the Ash body...so I bought a '61 Alder body that had in the past been sprayed Sonic or Daphne Blue over the original Sunburst.

The Blue had been stripped back off to reveal the original colour, but unfortunately bits of the blue had melted into the Sunburst and the body was a bit of a mess, so I sanded it a tad to make sure the new paint would go on and stay on, and sprayed it with a few thin coats of nitro, but yes, you remember well, from a rattlecan, as back then (and probably still nowadays), you couldn't get nitro any other way in the UK.

I skipped the clear as I wanted a flatter look...over the years sometimes I have regretted not doing the clear, but it is now part of the guitar's history. :)

Here is a photo after I resprayed it:

The pin/badge/medal I had on my strap was one like this:

You can sort of see it in this picture, from a show at Southend in 2007:

Here's some belt buckle wear after a million gigs/rehearsals etc...the original Sunburst coming through...I want to see the Fender Custom Shop have a go at re-creating this one! :D

Incredible. The shot of the back, I'd never seen before! I'm pretty sure you can't get that kind of wear with a belt-sander, so the Ye Olde Custome Shoppe is out! :D

Now that I see the pin, I'm pretty sure you posted it before. What a great part of OSG history!

I remember falling in love with Jazzmasters before joining OSG a long, long time ago, and this particular guitar was a big part of it !
It felt at the time that you had to have a really cool black/tort JM to be a mod here :D
Hehehe!! You are right, back then a few of the mods definitely had a thing for black + tort! :D :)
Yeah, that sounds about right. For a long time I had a black '66 Jazzmaster with a tortoise guard (late '66 with a nylon guard, not celluloid) and a black '66 Jaguar with a tortoise guard. Before those, a black '61 Jazzmaster. I sold the '66 JM and Jag to fund an original Olympic White '65 Jaguar which I still own. It's a little bittersweet but that white Jag is one of my favorite guitars of all time. But I will say that black with tortoise is still one of the classiest combos :-*

Your JM looks perfect these days Yannis! You better not even think about refinishing it again! It has history now.. your history!

So nice to see all those pics of the black Jazzmaster. It's a stunner, for sure. And I have a similar pin somewhere, it has a heavy duty screw-on disc on the back. You're brave for putting it on the strap that close to the guitar finish.

My contribution to the armwear violates both the offset and vintage criteria, but at least it keeps the color + pg combo in the ballpark.

I remember that black '66! That was a real cool guitar! :-* :-* :-*

I think our other Justin (Daydreamdelay) also had a black+tort '66-or-so JM, and then also Dr Z had a '64 black+tort!

This threat has really pushed me towards leaving mine alone. Lot's of history there! :-*

That's the one! That screw-on disk thing required a proper hole in the strap! Oh to be young and brave like that again!! :D

Your LP Special looks really cool! Never seen one like that before...very cool Fender vibe. 8)
