WHY?: de-fin under the pickguard

Post by Pacafeliz » Sat Aug 21, 2021 11:40 pm

So my brother has this early 70s competition Mustang, it's gloriously beautiful and worn in. He's had it for a couple years, but now the Duncan pickup in the bridge stopped working. He opened it up for the first time and found this:

:'(

WTF?! Why and HOW would someone do this?! :fp:

I guess the pickguard isn't original then, either.

Anyone have an idea?

A combination of drink and drugs most likely.

My guess is the paint was reacting weirdly at the guard's contact. Previous owner saw it and thought It would spread/crackle to the rest of the finish and decided to take it off?

Sounds like a reasonable explanation... Could also explain why the pickguard is clean...

Cause the wood’s gotta breathe man! That’s where the tone comes from!

Or there was a clear pickguard on that guitar at some point and the owner wanted to see the wood, and not the blue paint so he removed it ???

Aside from the above the only thing I can think of is that someone added some homebrew shielding and thought it should contact the wood? That damn metallic paint is conductive! Lol.

:fp:

Was the paint removed from only under the pickguard or was it stripped and then painted with the pickguard on?!

The finish looks original, comp stripe and all, I doubt that was the case.

It's good they didn't take to it with the chisel, to "reduce weight".

This. Have seen many examples (usually 70s) where the paint has reacted badly with the guard and lifts off the body with the guard is removed. Almost like CBS didn't let the finishes dry properly.
