1967 Jaguar, Candy Apple Red

Post by JSett » Thu Aug 05, 2021 11:32 am

So, I sold my Custom Shop Jazzmaster just in time to snag a pretty good deal on this Jaguar. Advertised as a 1966, beat up, bad pictures. The guy had had it for sale for about 4 months with no bites. He drove down to me tonight so I could dismantle it in front of him and check it out as he was oblivious to taking apart guitars, let alone checking dates and pots etc. I'm not sure this thing has ever even been apart fully. All the pickguard and control plates screws are brand new though...way too shiny to be old.

How it arrived, 8lbs 7oz...

Neck off. Oct 66 date. Confirmed original paint:

Under the bonnet. All the switches look original. Pots date to 1966 (1376634)

Pickups look undisturbed and are hand-dated January '67. I guess this makes it a 1967 then, no big deal:

Came with the OHSC

Strung it up with some fresh 11's and it sounds great:

So, neck date says 66, neck plate serial is 172880 which is apparently '66...but the pickups are '67. 1967 it is then.

So, the only thing that seems to be missing is the mute. If you good people could take a look over this and let me know if there seems to be anything I missed that would be great. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it and think I got a reasonable deal considering the current climate on vintage guitar prices.

yeah, I think that's a sensible price considering the few faults it has - in particular the fucking burnt headstock 🀣 when a new MIA Jag is about £2k then I don't think a vintage one being approx 50% higher is unreasonable...there's plenty of people trying to get a lot more for them.

There's a couple of 60s ones on eBay USA I might try and get for a good price. If not, that's a good shout, thanks!

Not normally a fan of CAR or matching headstock. But that wear with b&b is sexy 😍😍😍
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Ditto on the CAR... Its one of my least favourite colours but it's hard to argue with that checking and the fact it's darkened up a fair bit.

Nothing suspicious that I can see. Happy to say that after I shat all over your poor Mustang, but that story ended well and it looks amazing now, too!

Did you get a story about the rectangular void in the wear on the front? I'm super curious about that. It's almost as though there was a giant sticker that protected that patch from wear and aging, but was removed without damaging the finish (which is super unlikely to do if a sticker is on nitro for the decades it would have taken to wear through the surrounding finish!).

Congrats, it's a beauty, and from my understanding, that's a good price for a CAR Jag in the UK.

Hah! That Mustang deserved to be shat on to be honest 🀣

The void was, in fact, from some kind of bumper sticker apparently. Removed before his ownership. I really wanna know what the sticker was too.

He left the receipt in the case from when he bought it. Β£5000 in 2019. That must have stung a little. Said he was selling to fund a Les Paul though so I don't feel too bad

Nice!!

There's something about these old 60s B & B necks. The blocks have a gorgeous yellow lustre & the rosewood's not too dark, not too light. Really nice!!

The previous owner must've been wearing some kind of beaver belt buckle though. Pretty extreme wear hitting a specific spot.
As to the headstock burn... what the fuck?! I can imagine there's a really stupid, stoned story behind that one.

What year did bridges change to non-domed on top of the posts ?

Was there ever a consensus on this? I've seen both flat and domed scattered among all different years. I forgot to mention that I said to the guy I thought it might not be the original bridge (and forgot to post the picture I took too...

This is definitely getting a Staytrem/Mastery at some point. It's been a while since I've had the misfortune of dealing with one of these and forgot how much they suck 🀣

On the flip-side, the neck on this thing is utterly divine. It's perfectly broken-in which helps, but the profile is an almost perfect fit for my hand... extremely comfortable

Out of curiosity, what's the official/accepted line with regards dating these? I guess most traders/shops would just go by neck date & serial, which would make this a '66. Obviously, digging deep into the belly forensically shows this probably left the factory early '67.

Not that I care all too much but interested to know
