I found an original 1964 Sherwood Green Jag!

Post by Mattosaurus87 » Sun Jul 18, 2021 6:23 am

A while back, a buddy of mine let me know of friend of his that had passed away. My buddy was helping his friends widow sell her late husbands guitars/amps, etc. so she wouldn't be burdened with getting rid of all his gear. So, knowing that I'm a big offset fan, he came to me saying there was a guitar I needed to check out. He showed me pictures on his phone of what looked like a mid 60's Jag in Lake Placid Blue faded to a greenish hue. I said I was interested, so we set up a day to go get it. It was a couple hour drive, but well worth it. We get to his friends house and the basement/bottom floor is a complete home studio with about 40 amps, 50 guitars, more studio gear than you could shake a stick at. So he takes me to the case for the Jaguar and when I open it, I couldn't believe it...it was an original factory custom color Sherwood Green Jag! Needless to say I was floored about this thing and couldn't wait to get it home! I took the strings off and proceeded to look at the pot codes, 8th week of 1964 and completely undisturbed solder. I carefully unbolted the neck, and I believe I was the first person to turn the screws. I still can't believe I happened upon this, and couldn't be happier. What makes the story of this guitar crazy is that this was purchased at a pawn shop 15 years ago! My buddy's friend bought it for the color (who wouldn't!?), to which it then just sat it in its case pretty much until I bought it. I'm proud to be this rare gem's custodian for the foreseeable future 8) I'll get better pictures of it soon, but here are the initial ones I took. Like many old Fender finishes, it isn' quite like newer versions. There is a metallic element to it, but doesn't have large metallic flakes like newer guitars. Anyways, she's beautiful. I'm naming her Lucky.

That is my ultimate super holy grail, birthyear guitar.

Honestly, I don't think they come any better.

Nice. Cool how different the color can look depending on the light.

God I love this vintage Sherwood Green. I like the darker Robin Hood one, but the vintage with some blue in it.. Just freaking incredible.

Holy SHIT! Charcoal Frost. Real deal inca or refin? Firemist on the right? I have all those colors! Though not vintage. Not as cool as you!

They're all the real deal and all original minus the Mastery bridges. The clear coat on the gold has yellowed from UV over time so it looks like Firemist, its lighter in the cavities. The Inca is a very special one and will probably go to the grave with me haha

Congrats again Matt! Such an amazing find, I’m glad you scored this one, it’s in good company.

That is my favorite Fender custom color and like you mentioned, it’s nothing at all like what Fender calls Sherwood Green today. It’s probably further away than any other custom color from the original shade.

Perfect! And in amazing condition, so cool
