That's what I think, Charcoal Frost has got to be the original finish.

This is such a box of surprises. I'm sure if you keep on sanding it turns out to be a unicorn or rainbow...

A bit of progress today. Found another weird spot that I can't explain as being play wear in any way, unless maybe whoever had it was pulling a Nels Cline and beating it with a drum stick in that area...so yeah. Weird. Really struggling with getting the small spots of top coat sanded away, as I keep getting little bits of white coming through as sand through. Like by the trem route, for example. Talk about a lot of work...

Excuse the dumb questions. But I'm not getting the sequence here... 1. Lake Placid Blue refinish 2. The white colored coat 3. CFM and 4. The gold-ish coat?

From top to bottom layer:

Lake Placid Blue refinish -> Gold undercoat for metallic shine on LPB -> Charcoal Frost original finish -> White base coat.

Keep up the good work, I reckon it'll actually look kick-ass once you get it back to (mostly) charcoal frost!

You were right! Hahaha.

Did some sanding tonight and got most of the gold off on the front of the body. Not sure if I'm going to try any more at this point to get the small bits of gold - I guess I'm not precise enough with spot sanding but it's been leading to small sand throughs, especially at the edges of the routes. Honestly, I kind of dig how it looks and probably won't bother too much with getting all the refin off, especially considering I want to play it more than anything. Will try to get some of the refin off the back and sides, and still need to work on the headstock. I'm having trouble getting the tuner ferrules out of the holes, any suggestions?

I bet your arms feel like they’re gonna fall off after all that sanding! Looks cool though!

I agree! But yeah I'm getting pretty tired of it.

Actually I think I'm done sanding for a while. Did the headstock tonight, as much as I could as I can't get the ferrules out, all good though. The CFM is fairly intact except for couple sand throughs, including where we had tried to check for the decal previously. No decal, as you can see.



Honestly I'm kind of fine with how it looks for now, I think I'm gonna wire it up tomorrow and go ahead and set it up to play until I take it in for the refret it needs, maybe sometime later this week.

Well, I think that's it for now.

Rewired it and set it up last night, I guess I lost one of the shims previously so I had to add another but it's still fretting out on the low E at like the 17th fret. Fine everywhere else except the high e the same area, with a medium/low action. Maybe it needs another shim? Raising the bridge more at the moment makes the low E action way too high, so I'm wondering it it's even a shim issue. Fine with me, I'm not really playing that high up anyway.

It had a bit of buzz when I tested it last night, gonna actually plug it in today and see if it's alright. I do think it's due for a refret though, playable currently but those frets are tiiiiiny. Maybe that'll fix the fretting out at higher frets? I did also notice that the vibrato doesn't feel like it bends upward smoothly. Whenever I first got it, they had it set up where the spring was tightened all the way and you couldn't bend it upward at all. I messed with it a bit and it's better now but still not a smooth transition. Any suggestions on that? Otherwise, I'm very stoked on this thing.

ok. so the forearm looks like it was cfm over 3tsb. honestly a good paint shop could probs get it back to CFM .

It's not 3ts under there - that red you're seeing was on top of the CFM. I peeled a bunch of it back when I first started stripping this thing. If you could look at the chips of paint coming off, you'd see Blue on top -> Gold -> Red on the bottom. Super weird.

My theory is that it's either the bottom of the gold layer that has oxidized (or gone through another process), or it was just a red base coat under the gold. But it's definitely on top of the CFM. If you look two photos above the last post, you'll see that the CFM on the arm contour transitions into the red, then into the gold.

And yeah, if I send it off for a refin, it'll go to Danocaster to get it proper. I actually think I'm gonna keep it like this though!
