Marty Jenner Vintage Fender Jaguar Challenge

Post by FenderBob » Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:41 am

Any OSG'ers up for a challenge?

Ok, Here's the scoop, I been spending lots of time watching old Cliff Richard concerts to get glimpses of Martin Jenner (who also goes by Marty, Mart) playing his 65/66 Jaguar. The guitar that was later made famous by Mr. Kurt Cobain.

Here's an example, fast forward to 1:23 and 2:38 to see the jag in action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTHviZ0bpFA

Anyway, I've been able to find plenty of vides with him and the guitar with the bound block neck.

But then I found on instagram, that a user going by LordFuzzman, posted a shot of Marty using the jaguar with the bound dot neck. (I do give him the credit for what appears to be the first finding of a video of the jag with the bound neck).

I was floored and asked the Lordfuzz if he could share where he found the video, and so far, he hasn't responded. Sent a few DM's too, no answers. :( :fp:

Bit tricky of a search because Marty played many guitars, strats, teles, etc. and I don't know which direction of 1980 to be looking.

Marty was a session player that played in many different bands.

The facial hair could provide some clues, however can't spend all this time watching Cliff myself, my wife and kids are getting concerned that I haven't been showering or shaving.

Decided I needed to open this search up to the good folks at OSG. Appreciate the help if anyone is game.

To add a little fun, First to find the video gets a trophy and a prize (both guitar parts related).
Full disclaimer....Under $30 value.

Good luck, I will be searching too.

i think it's safe to say a luthier in the UK made that neck.

I have another thought on this. Was messing around with Cad and am fairly certain it is a carved down vintage headstock. Neck heel is said to all standard vintage fender markings including date stamp. More to follow.

Oh I didn't know that, ok cool.
It's so ironic that KC's favorite guitar belonged to a guy who played in a huge Christian Rock band :D :D

I think it’s pretty obvious now, that once Marty changed the neck on the guitar, something drastically changed about the guitar. First he started hears whispers about how the light was dangerous, and something about a mulattos libido? So he put the guitar in its case, and hid it in his closet. But everytime he walked past the closet, he continued to hear whispers. Sell the kids for food! Monkey see, monkey do! Never met a wise man, if so it’s a woman.

All devil talk! So he listed it for sale, and got rid of it as soon as he could.

Don't disagree with any of this but need to point out that when Marty played this, there was no strap button on the lower horn (see middle photo below) which seems to be proof is was played right handed AFTER Marty parted with the guitar. There is more mystery here.

It could have changed hands a few times after Marty. What others have been exposed to the voodoo of the bound dot neck?

Man, the life of objects fascinates me to no end sometimes. Some Jaguars ended up in cases in attics for decades, this one went around the world with a bunch of different owners adding to and changing it.
Science Friction burns my fingers
Electricity still lingers

Am I the only one that thinks there's nothing particularly special about this partscaster? It's not even a cool colour *shrugs shoulders*
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Guess I look at it like this:

Offset ? Yes. So pretty cool right off the bat.
Funky mods? yes. So getting better
lots of wear? Yes. Sweet to see natural wear n tear (even if from abuse)
Associated with KC? Yes. So very cool
Survives tenure with KC? Yes, whoa, impossibly lucky guitar
Mysterious past? Yes. Interesting & intriguing
Custom color? No, but review first six.

Nothing much to add here other than I think the Martin Jenner discovery some years back was one of the coolest moments of online guitar archaeology ever.

It’s already fascinating guitar (to many of us) and back in the day its entire back story was a huge mystery. While there are still a few unknown details, it’s amazing to see this guitar in its previous life.

Also, it would be amazing to get some detailed recent shots of the guitar, it’s one of the most well hidden famous guitars ever.

Always assumed she gave it to Eric. There's been some rumors that Frances has it now.
