Very nice Jaguar indeed!!! Congratulations!!
There´s something similar for sale at ebay kleinanzeigen.
Not mine, don´t know the seller, it seems a shop:

Maybe someone is happy about the link?

Re: NGD: 1964 Fender Jaguar
So, the bridge pickup is insanely weak compared to the neck, and the caps for the strangle switch and tone pot seem non-existent.
Is that common? I know that caps can die over the years (see: my original Rockman), but is that what's up with the pot and the switch? And what to do about a completely unbalanced set of pickups?
HELP!

Do you have a multimeter? My first step would be to measure the resistance of both pickups at the output jack, and then from the eyelets on the undersides of the pickups themselves. That'll give some sense of where the issue lies with the weak sounding pickup.Maggieo wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2022 7:21 pmSo, the bridge pickup is insanely weak compared to the neck, and the caps for the strangle switch and tone pot seem non-existent.

When you say nonexistent caps, do you mean that they don't affect the tone at all as you move the switch and tone knob?

If it measures weak, like under 4k, I suppose I would have it rewound. I would check the neck pickup too. It might be best to get them both fixed together. Alternatively, you could put it in a drawer and have a new one made to match the neck pickup.
The neck pickup on my ‘66 is down to 5.0k, about 1k less than the bridge pickup. I’m finding it’s enjoyably mellow and they match well enough to still sound great together, but at some point I’ll probably have to have it rewound too. I’m assuming magnets lose strength over time and all old electrics sound a little different now from how they did originally.
I also noticed my tone control doesn’t change the tone as much as I think it ought to, but I don’t really use it anyway. The strangle switch cap is definitely still in spec, but switching to the rhythm circuit is a surprisingly subtle change (fortunately).
Personally, I wouldn’t hesitate to replace the strangle switch cap if it’s drifted completely off spec. It’s just a silly old cap.

Thanks, guys! I'll take the Jag in to see my pal Dustin and his multimeter.
And yes, the tone pots and switch have little to no effect, aside from the pot dropping the volume a bunch.

Yep. Though on the other hand, I've taken mine to practice a couple times and played two shows, and I keep being told how great it sounds. And it absolutely does. Plays great too. I just don't like that I feel like I can't fix or change anything about it without hurting the value.

I'm not too worried about swapping caps. But, of course, I'll have the originals squirreled away in the case.Sauerkraut wrote: ↑Fri Dec 09, 2022 12:30 pmYep.
