SH-32 is a good synth to learn on. It's like a cross between a synth and an electribe, good for compositional stuff. What a dude your sister's workmate is!

I had an old Realistic (Tandy/Radioshack) keyboard that I once left outside the rehearsal room with a post-it that read 'Steal Me', but that surely is thrillanthropy of the highest order.

Love/hate relationship with my Little Phatty II.
I seem to like using the midi on garage band more than I do the LPII now. The presets were fun to begin but now I'm wanting something a bit more fluent I guess. The whole lead-synth thing doesn't interest me at all... in fact, it's quite shudder worthy (/jokes!) :D

Seriously though if anyone can suggest anything to rekindle my love of straight synth go ahead. At the moment, it's my pedalboard (where a lot of it is hit and miss) and crappy garage band stuff (have been meaning to get better audio software but just don't have the dosh and gb's been sufficient for recording).

no pics at the moment, but I've got a Juno 106 which is great fun. Unfortunately I don't use it often live and it's a bit cumbersome to carry around for one or two songs, so it tends to just sit in my bedroom. I do occasionally use it to record or for midi use though.

My roommate's got a nice Roland SH-101. It's not great about staying in tune but it sounds phenomenal.

I'm not really much of a synth/keyboard man beyond basic attempts at scales and chords, but I recently bought a used 80's Yamaha PSS-480. Just like this one here:

It's nothing spectacular, but I think it's pretty good for £15 shipped. :)

(some shown/not shown/since traded/behind the camera in these now years-old photos...)

Roland SH09
Roland Juno 106
Akai AX60
Alesis Micron
Seil Orchestra II
Akai S2000 w/ CD-ROM, hard drive, Zip drive, maxed out RAM and has the somewhat sought-after FX board (another "this thing was only $40 on Craigslist!" project where I ended up spending more tracking down old SCSI peripherals at Re-PC and eBay than I spent on the darn thing).
toy piano from Goodwill
Yamaha S03 (mainly used as a MIDI controller, but might use for generic 'piano' and 'string' patches live depending on what we end up doing with the new songs)

'In the band' but belong to the other guy in the band:

Korg MS2000
Access Virus
Korg EA1
silver-colored keyboard of some sort (M-Audio or something)

On loan for this project:

Linn Drum LM2

...and a bunch of software stuff, and 'noise toys' like the Talking Computron, Bleep Labs Thingamagoop, old (all tube!) Hewlett Packard signal generator that used to belong to the Federal Aviation Administration, etc....

I have a Dave Smith MoPho and really like it. Great sounding analog synth for a reasonable price. I bought mainly it to experiment with synthesis, and since I'm awful at playing keys monophonic really hasn't been a problem fo me. Some people don't like it. I also have a DW 800 that I bought on craigslist for $75.

My least favorite thing about synths is the inability to just pick them up and rock out. It's mighty discouraging to me to see a pile of midi cable and controllers, and I don't have enough room in my apartment to keep my synths set up anywhere. I don't have a practice space anymore so I rarely find myself playing them.

Holy shit! I need to come up with 5k...although if I had 5k I would probably just buy a used voyager and spend the rest on moogerfoogers...

i played an "old school" voyager today, and i pretty much shat my pants. I didn't know they could sound so nasty and dirty. it was lovely. all the demos out there are always "here's some 70s prog synth lines".
I actualy considered bringing in all my synths for it. haha. :D

im also just tempted to finance it.

Yeah, they can sound really nasty if you want them to. You should look out for a Moog Prodigy, if you're looking for a dirty synth sound without spending loads of money. It's not as versatile as a Model D/Voyager, but it sounds a lot rougher than those two (in a good way!). Also, it has that "sync" sound that no other Moog has...

"old school" voyager?

You guys will make a just-turned-30 man feel old.

I think Moog called it the "Old School" to make you feel old ;). An Old-school Minimoog will always be the Model D to me too. I think it's pretty cool that they released the OS voyager though - it's a Minimoog for people who want a model D, but either can't afford a vintage one or don't want to bring one on the road.

Haha, yeah there is! It's the Voyager, but with no presets or touchscreen: http://www.moogmusic.com/voyager/?secti ... t_id=21108

It's priced somewhere between the LP and the Voyager.

You shouldn't feel old, you weren't even born when your Minimoog was made - my Prodigy is a couple of years older than me!

I don't have much love for the Phatty..terrible name too..but the Voyager is great..it really does stack up against the old Moogs.

I have the Moog Source and the MemoryMoog Plus.

The new Voyager XL looks crazy..a 5 octave key bed on a monosynth is ridiculous and it's hugely expensive. Everyone just wants them to make a new polysynth...
