You could get like 4-5 of these. Great mics, as is everything EV. I like them better than the sm58. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Electro-Vo ... cal-Mic.gc
That’s quite a deal. I have an attenuator on hold at my local GC I’m planning to pick up soon, so if they have a demo I’ll give it a shot.

Get the Audix. They have best rejection but you need to be on it like basically just have your lips touch it the whole time you're singing. They always cut through better than any Shure IME. Obv it depends on the singer, everyone is different.

The OM5 is the one we use. My bandmate also uses a VoiceLive 3 and that mic works & sounds better with FX as well, especially AT.
This is great info. My mic technique has gotten a lot better. I’m still a little nervous about kissing mic as I’ve shocked myself many a time at sketchy venues. At my practice space we keep amps and PA on the same circuit so this has not been a problem.

Just curious, which one are you getting?

yes that is the crux, a true concern that all singers who play guitar or bass have to deal with.

McIntyre SPA1. Looks to be a knockoff of a Swart Night Light. Only rated to 25 watts, but all my amps are under.

It was dirt cheap and sounded good enough when I tested it in store. We’ll see.

Our whole band is on Beta 57a’s. I like the way they sound.
An other mic to consider that hasn’t been mentioned yet is the sE V7. Our Drummer is a sound engineer as his day job and always has a few of them in his mic case.

Based on this endorsement I’ve decided to give the OM5 a shot. I also saw a band the other night where the singer was using an Audix mic he had brought. Not sure what model, but it obviously had a very tight pattern, and his voice was very clear and articulate compared to many other singers I’ve heard on 58s at the same venue.

I found a used one for cheap and ordered it this morning.

I figure if it’s as crispy as it seems to be I might be able to add a thin foam windscreen to both help with plosives and my apprehension about getting zapped.

yeah I really like the OM5. I don't sing but I liked the difference I heard on both male and female vocals.

Another vote for sennheiser e945. I’m a quiet singer and needed something with strong gain and feedback rejection. It does that for sure, but it’s certainly pricier than a 58 or other 58 clones.

The Audix OM5 arrived today. I wasn’t sure what to expect due to GC’s typical potato photo, but it’s in great cosmetic shape. The pouch was a little dusty so I gave it a bath.

I made some quick recordings with it and Initial impressions are good. It’s not as crispy as I feared, just very mid focused. The pattern will take some getting used to, but there seems to be a good sweet spot. It isn’t perfect with plosives, but night and day compared to the 57.

Tomorrow night is virtual open mic, and Sunday is practice, so I’ll post some more thoughts after a proper workout.

Story checks out. I think it’s going to work out great.

I played some acoustic and sang last night at home and was surprised at how little guitar bleed there was on my test recordings.

Brought it to practice tonight and the difference was pretty shocking in a rock context. Much more clarity and cut. I felt a lot more confident singing. The pattern wasn’t too tough to adapt to. I really only noticed when I would wander off during an instrumental bit and didn’t quite get back on the mic in time.

Yup! 8)

It just works. sm58s always sound like mud to me. sm57s sound better but feedback too easy and don't reject enough.

If the person in charge of sound knows their rig and has tuned it well then a 58 can sound absolutely perfect for a lot of situations. They're the Swiss army knife of mics for a reason - but they don't suit every voice, I'll admit that. You gotta be a bit of a loud singer

I see the SM58 like I see the Strat. It’s a thing that works well for many people in many situations and gets recommended a lot for good reason.

I’m glad to have options.
