Got a Yamaha Combo Organ! w00t!

Post by stevejamsecono » Thu Feb 21, 2008 4:07 pm

As several of you saw on the For Sale page, I'd been trying to trade my Fender Rhodes off (liked it, but it was too heavy and I didn't use it nearly enough to justify having it). Anyway, via craigslist I found a kid my age who had a Yamaha YC-10 (basically exactly what I wanted), and we did a straight trade today.
So far, I am LOVING IT. I've been playing "96 Tears" and "Radio Radio" all day. Totally awesome.
I'll post some legit pics later, but for now, it looks like this:

We're both happy campers, and on top of it, made a new friend too because the guy was pretty cool. Good times :)

....geez - I would have traded you my Farfisa for a Rhodes.  I've never heard that Yamaha, but I know the Farfisa gets very close to the same sound as those songs.

Why oh why can't I find a decent deal on a Rhodes?  I have been trying for years and have come so close so many times either just missing out or not having the funds at the time to pull the trigger.

...and why oh why are Wurli's so effin expensive now?  I swear they weren't so expensive 5 or 6 years ago when I didn't play much keyboards.

it seems that here in germany a fender rhodes in good condition is worth it's on weight in gold ;)
if i could handle the transport i'd have bought yours, and i don't even play a single song on keys (also not on guitar, so...)

but: this organ looks cheesy! what does it sound like? i like those cheesy organ sounds!
never saw one of these before.

It sounds great, I really like it. It's got two voices, one is a bit deeper, one is a bit brighter. Nails the "House of the Rising Sun"/anything by the Dave Clark Five kind of sound.
I'm surprised you guys can't find Rhodes's for cheaper. There've been like... 3 on the Craigslist in my area in the last week for under 600$.
I imagine not all of their owners would trade them for organs, but I just didn't use mine, and as far as value, I got the thing for free to begin with so I didn't feel right trying to sell it for big money or anything. I put it up as a trade option, I got a bunch of offers, and I ended up finding a kid in basically the same position as me who just wanted one to play with, so we made the swap.
It's a lot of fun though, I kind of want another one already.

Great score (though technically you've probably lost quite a bit trading a rhodes for this one, but somehow I think the money issue doesn't matter to you. Good!). Any chance of some sound clips? Even if it's just "96 tears" and "radio radio" :).

Yeah, the money thing really doesn't matter to me. I dunno, one of my guitarist friends was giving me a bit of shit over it, and I finally just told him, "Look dude, it's worth $0 sitting in my room not being played." and that kind of shut him up. I dunno, as far as I see it everyone got what they wanted and I made a new friend, so I saw no reason to try to extort extra money out of him.

I'll post some sound clips when I get home from work tonight. It sounds pretty wonderful through my Bassman with 15"s :)

Damn!

I've been trying to get rid of an old Ace Tone organ I have.  And here's a guy in Fitchburg looking for a cool combo organ.

Excellent score, though.

who knows, I may want another one some day. If the tax return is extra big I'll pm you or something. Don't want to upset the admins :)

Still sweet, photos and sound clips to come this week, promise.

Cool organ! I bet you're having a whole lot of fun. Still looking for an organ player for my band, but they seem to be even rarer than drummers.

Yeah I feel you on that. We kind of just made one up, I'm writing the parts, but my upstrairs neighbor is playing it. She's never played a keyboarded instrument in her life, but she's proven a fast learner.

ha! tonight i had MUCH fun with old cheesy organs.
in my local radio show i played 2 hours of 70th electronic stuff, and much of contains lots of organ sounds (with a little bit help of schulte compact phasing).
these old records played through the studios monitoring at adequate volume = very nice :)

nope, it's not allowed. the GEMA (the Society for musical performance and mechanical copy rights) takes insane fees for downloads.
nevertheless i have a copy of that show.
the ideal of the classy-organ-albums for me were definitely jean-michel jarre's oxygen and equinoxe. everybody talks about his synthesizer use and blah, but all the polyphonic parts on this records are organs...
