me vs midi

Post by Plumerai » Sun Dec 29, 2024 2:54 pm

What I have: Kahler Human Clock (audio to midi device to control tempo). Kenton midi to cv convertor. Boss DM-101.
What I hope to do: Control the delay tempo with the Kahler by attaching a contact mic to the kick drum & having that set the tempo.

I was able to control a Korg Volca Beat with just the Kahler. Both use a regular midi cable. Maybe the Korg only sees the proper midi signal (no settings to be made). The DM-101's midi input is the smaller type which the Kenton's aux out also uses. I set the DM-101 to see midi clock, but nothing happens. Maybe I should use a different setting?

What a neat idea!

I’d think you can stay entirely midi (no cv), with the main requirement being that the clock is sending signals to the pedal on the right channel and in the right format (ie whatever the dm101 wants to see as a clock, which is probably a CC(?) message. Edit: no it’s just a clock of course). Was the Korg getting midi or cv?

Would just connecting the Kahler Human Clock directly to the DM-101 with one of these work?

I don't have one of the Kahler devices but that's how I sync tempo from drum machines/synths/my PC with my DM-101/RE-202 etc.

The Korg has a regular old style midi input (5 pin?). The DM-101's midi in/out uses the tiny plug.

I didn't know that cable existed. That might be what I need. The CV plug looks like a little mono plug.

Note that there are two different standards (formats?) for midi to 1/8: type A (boss uses this) and type B. (Basically, what is getting sent to tip/ring/sleeve). If you are using the “wrong” type, it won’t register with the pedal

You can also get a small female 5 pin midi to 1/8” jack adapter (which should be $10 or less) so you can use a normal midi cable to adapter instead of using a longer proprietary cable.

I don’t think you’ll want CV in this situation.

I ordered that Boss cable pictured above, so hopefully that will take care of controlling the dm-101. I read somewhere that the expression jack on some pedals use cv to control parameters. I'll experiment with that next.

Good luck! It’ll be awesome when it works.

Just to recap (copied from a Morningstar forum post) for the DM101:
Receive CC Messages to On
Receive PC Messages to On
Receive MIDI Clock to Auto
Setting the MIDI Receive Channel to match the Kahler

If it still gives you trouble, There are free midi monitor utilities for the computer that can show what’s being sent on what channel etc.

Thanks for that info. I think I have it sorted out now. At first it seemed like the modulation was changing but not the tempo. Eventually I was able to control the tempo via the Kahler. Oddly the blinking light on the dm-101 doesn't seem to change with the tempo. Maybe it's locked to the internal clock. Need to try this out with drums & see if the dm-101 can pass the clock to other pedals.
