New Drum Set Day!

Post by Unicorn Warrior » Mon Jun 27, 2022 3:19 pm

The old MIJ blue sparkle Pearl drums have done their job. But, they’re getting tired. I think it’s time for them to be moved along for someone else to enjoy in their twilight years.

I’m making room for these new Tama Starclassics:

Image

I’m going to go ahead and say I’m not really a drum guy. I typically really dig sparkle finishes, but something about this crazy wrap just spoke to me. It is called Phantasm Oyster. Will report back with actual pictures whenever they come in. These are just stock photos of the same model.

Anyone have any experience with these? Or Tama drums in general?

Sweet!

I’ve played drums in a few bands. It is good fun (except at the end of the night).

Thanks bud.

From exhaustion? Or ears gone?

Honestly, I’m quite excited about the dynamic/movement aspect of it all. I want to be the stereotypical all in drummer you know. The kind that sweats everywhere for the sake of the show.

I always wanted to play drums, but I've got no rhythm with drumsticks. That said, I would rock the [un-rhythmic] hell out of that. Gorgeous set!!!

Thanks man!!

I legit have no rhythm with sticks (probably guitar too if I’m honest) either :freako:

But, I do want to get better. I’ll be practicing a bit. My hope is to be able to get us through some of our basic sets. This kit is mainly for our band which lately has been featuring revolving drummers.

On another note, didn’t realize this set didn’t have a tom mount on the kick. Looks like I gotta buy a new stand too :fp:

Loading/moving/unloading awkward things after playing is a drag.

I almost think drum set-up may be easier for me actually. Unless mics are involved that is. I already move awkward equip with my guitar rig. My pedalboard (huge) and my amp comprise almost 100lbs. Let alone my power hookups, mandatory 2 guitars, and cables I bring :D

Factory line drum 'finishes' (wraps) are always way cooler and more diverse than guitar ones. Looks like these shells are walnut & birch.

I was always a Pearl man, other brands always gave me a hard time with their hardware's adjustability, durability, comfort, sleekness, & compatibility, so even though I'd happily hit or listen to shells made by anyone else, I'll never again tough another brand with my wallet due to those hardware considerations.

In the brief time that a band I drummed in was split across the state, the guitarist bought one of these sets (a 3-piece) in red with black competition stripes. I used his kit when we played or practiced at his end. It was a fine kit, but I was of course annoyed that the tom wouldn't easily mount on my cymbal stands...

Yes, they are walnut and birch. I’m told they are both somewhat lower in pitch which is exciting.

I can’t speak to any other drums besides the 1968 MIJ Pearls. And those are dinosaurs as far as hardware is concerned. I used the old school kick drum tom mounts and the rest was all Mapex hardware.

I’ll be using that same mapex hardware with the exception of a Tama tom stand thrown in. I’m sure it will all be infinitely better than what I had.

Should be here by Friday.

Hell yeah! Those are going to sound great. Tama doesn't make bad gear, the only knock on them is they're incredibly overbuilt and tend to be a bit heavy. But if you're not moving them a lot it won't really matter.

On a bright note, they’re here. I don’t really notice them being too heavy. This mostly may be because my guitar rig probably weighs 120lbs counting guitar/case, amp, and pedalboard. Anything less than half the weight of that is cool

Build quality seems very good for these. A definite step up from the old Pearls. They’re a proper kit. Finish is crazy cool with metallic paint laced throughout the pattern. I’ll try to take some pics.

If I'm honest, all the Tama kits I've played were better than I gave them credit for. They're pretty solid and sounded really good.

Also, that's a gorgeous wrap!

Thank you! This ones actually a lacquer finish.

So far, this drum set is sounding great. It’s nice and booming in a good way

The whole “virgin” bass drum was a bit of a surprise for me when I bought my most recent set. I’d been playing the same Yamaha set for the last 20-some years, and decided last winter to get a good Ludwig set (Classic Maple). But I hadn’t noticed, until I started shopping, how all the sets had gone to the virgin bass drum, and using a snare stand or, like I’m doing, hanging it off a cymbal stand (I wasn’t wild about the extra floor space taken up by the snare stand).

That’s a super cool finish!
