I want to build some in-home studio sound walls- need help

Post by painted wood » Tue Sep 09, 2008 4:49 am

I'll be moving into a new house on Saturday and I'll have an extra bedroom to use as a studio/jam room.  I want to find some sound wall plans and build some walls myself.

What materials should I purchase/use?

I'm thinking of 3-4 foot squares with hinges holding two sections together to wrap around the drums and some other walls to put against the room's walls.

anyone have any plans for these?

thanks!

I helped a friend in constructing a studio while back.
we got alot of our bulk supplies and materials here
it's a great resource for saving money on supplies..
what are you looking to do?  build a traditional "Room within a room"
type of space?   Or are you just looking to even out some acoustic issues
with the room itself?   Do you have anymore info on the size/dimensions
and area of the rooms themselves?  Is it a control room + live room type setup?
All of these questions can help me give you some ideas or advice.. In fact a blue-print
or rough sketch of the room dimensions would be best.. hope this helps a bit though

EDIT:  here's a good site for some info..  Post back if you have anymore questions.

I'll post pics soon.  I am going to build a few foldable (like a book) moveable sound walls to surround the drums and isolate the guitar from the drums, and just kill some echo in the room.

I'm thinking of 4, 1x4 sides with a 2x3s attached down the center of it, framing a 4' square hard board (thin but strong) center, which is attached to one side of the 2/3.

Then I'll attach styrofaom, regular foam, cotton  or some tye of harmless insuslation material as the filler in the other side of the frame (the deeper side)and then staple a square of carpet to the other side of the 3" board so both sides of the framed-in 4' squae sound wall has a nice clean-lined design.  There will be 3 hinges that act as the spine of the two walls to set in a V shape on the floor.

I have some materials, I just need to get them transported over to my friend's house to make the cuts.

this is a really cool way to view a baffle/gobo blueprint..

first download for free: Google Sketchup

then download this project: Studio Baffle design

I built my Gobo up to spec and it's the ticket my friend!
