Incoming NMD - Superlux S502

Post by marqueemoon » Fri Jul 22, 2022 2:36 pm

Welp, I put in what I thought was a lowish bid and got it for $3 over the opening bid.

What did I buy?

Meursault?
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

It's wine. Sorry. I couldn't guess at anything music related.

MusicMan?

It’s a microphone, or two depending on how you’re counting.

Are they Russian?
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Made in China. A rough approximation of a much more expensive German mic for recording via a method devised by the French.

No. This will be used for things I’m not comfortable using my C422 for though.

I wasn't familiar with the C422 but it certainly does look like a great microphone.

So, you have a Chinese made stereo microphone in an ORTF position and the microphone is an interpretation of a German microphone.

This is what we know so far.

So, it's a Superlux S502.

And not the Schoeps MSTC 64.
Yes indeed.

I’ve been curious about this mic as soon as I learned it existed. There’s a video on YouTube of it on drum overhead duty that piqued my interest. There are also two separate videos of this and the Schoeps on a choir. The Schoeps is far superior in that application, but there are a lot of situations where a little less detailed sound is a good thing.

Yeah, I own two Neumann KM184s, and indeed, less detail can be better.

What do you intend to use it for? I'm a little intrigued also.

Band practices and shows, drum overheads and room mainly.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of recording my guitar and voice live with one mic, and I like how that glues things together, but I dislike the way it sounds with reverb. I like the idea of putting this several feet back for ambiance and leaving the close mic drier.

Probably can’t mic an acoustic too close with it without it getting weird in mono, but I’ll experiment with it.

I’ll try to post some clips.
