i made a Pultec EQP-1A

Post by øøøøøøø » Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:18 pm

came out pretty nice.

Stayed pretty true to original spec with the following exceptions:
  • Super-nice Cinemag transformers for interstage and output. These are more accurate-to-original than the Sowters that all the cloners seem to use. The HS-29 interstage is an "off-menu item," essentially custom, but reverse-engineered from original. Input transformer is an original Triad
  • My usual Dale CMF55 metal film resistors, because I no longer have time for carbon comp and have become sort-of unconvinced that they really impart anything special
  • Very nice polystyrene caps in the EQ section, and NOS Cornell-Dubilier "Greenie" polyester coupling caps instead of the Aerovox paper or paper-and-polyester caps in most originals
  • Instead of the "dump loose parts in the cans and pour a bunch of molten wax to hold it still" strategy of the old ones, I designed little PCBs that are hidden inside of the cans. That means I'll actually stand a chance of being able to fix a failure should one ever happen
NOS RCA, Sylvania and Raytheon tubes. Hammond 370BX power xformer. Old Switchcraft Telever bypass switch and smooth, unfaceted lamp jewel (surplus parts that are getting trickier to find).

Fired right up and worked the first time. Sounds fantastic.

Beautiful. Where do you get these kits, Brad? I don't know that I have the skills for this, but you are inspiring me to think I might.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Not a kit. Massive undertaking of parts selection and sourcing/surplus hunting--that's half the job.

The chassis is made by analogvibes in Germany (cringe @ name). Very nice chassis and front panel. I think they were selling kits for awhile, but then of course you're accepting someone else's choices for parts :)

Larry, you might find "Group DIY" to be a useful website if you're interested in the fun of the hunt.

Lots of parts sourcing and cooperative group buys of custom PCBs and stuff like that.
This is an excellent rectangle
