Josephson e22s on el gtr?

Post by cpeck » Mon Jan 03, 2022 4:19 am

Anyone have any experience using one of these mics on electric guitar? I’ve got a few dollars stashed and have been thinking about it.

No experience with that one.

I've used their C705 on guitar amp, and it was pretty good!

I'd still choose a U67 most times for a condenser on guitar cab, but it wasn't bad! I'm not sure that gives any info at all with respect to the e22s....

From what I know of them, most of the business end of their particular design is to be small footprint, good with high SPL sources and built to withstand a drumstick smashing it. Other than that, when I was about to buy one I realized that it was, otherwise, relatively unremarkable in sonic characteristics - just nicely flat in response.

I ended up using a some kind of SDC and a Coles 4038 in tandem on guitar as a go-to for a few years before I finally quit any recording enterprises. I got a pair of the Coles for the same price as one e22s which made more sense to my situation. YMMV

I wouldn't go for a condenser on a guitar cab unless I'd already tried all the usual suspects first. Namely, a ribbon. You can get two Beyerdynamic M160s for the cost of that Josephson and you'd have a couple of VERY useful mics that sound great on a ton of sources (overheads, piano, horns, electric guitar, etc). Once I started using one on my amps I wanted for nothing else in that department. If you want to spend more money there's always the Coles as was mentioned.

I never used much of the SDC signal in a mix, but sometimes it helped to blend in a little extra cut/bite/whatever if you needed it without reaching for an EQ. The M160's are great on almost everything, a real workhorse ribbon mic with a nice warm-but-never-dull sound and I always got good results with them. The Coles can be a tad dark for some mixes but, again, can be used almost everywhere in the studio - overheads (especially in Glynn Johns), cabs, vocals with high sibilance. I blew one once in front of a Mesa 400 bass rig but it was still loaded with it's original 50's/60's ribbon so was a little fragile (and it was a dumb thing to try, in hindsight).

I love a condenser on guitar cab.

U67 is my favorite, 47FET and U87 also very good. Sony C37a is also a popular choice for guitar cab.

I like the M160. I have one at home and we have several at the studio. It’s a really great guitar cab mic! But I don’t prefer it to any of the condensers above—just different.

Royer R121 might be my favorite ribbon for guitar. Seems boring, maybe, but it just works.

I personally would not use a Coles 4038 on guitar cab if the guitar was going to be loud (and I don’t see much reason to choose it over one of the above options). It’s not really a high-SPL mic (except in front of trumpet, where it’s quite good)

The usual moving coils are also useful—MD421, SM57, M88–especially when you want the presence peak of a 57 or 421, or when dealing with some kind of freak-loud amp like a 100W Marshall

thanks, everyone!

I have a Royer 121, several 421s, and several 57s. Currently using the royer/57 combo (with that very handy clip that came out for perfect phase).

I should have added that I have two friends currently using the Josephson for their big rock guitars in a blend with other things (sometimes a Royer, sometimes a 421, sometimes a Beyer M88), so was curious what the OSG set thought.

Brad, would love a U67 -- used a 90s reissue at one studio on our last record and it was an incredible sound. I have the Advanced Audio clone, but I suspect it doesn't capture the magic.

On the U67 front, I have a TLM67 that I've really been digging lately - haven't used it on electric, just acoustic and vocals. Probably won't get you much closer to the real thing than your AA67 but it's a really lovely mic.
