The evolution of home recording has certainly contributed to some shifts in the musical landscape, and in 2021 I don't even know if there's anything resembling a unified aesthetic that pervades music made at home.

Probably the thing most of it has in common is that a huge percentage of people are consuming it in video form with Youtube's compression algorithm destroying whatever work the artists/home engineers put into mastering, or streaming it at whatever reduced bitrate they've selected to save data on their app.

Here are Neon Vines and Ani DiFranco both performing live in their home studios. The budgets, gear, workflow, and end results are as different as the two artists themselves.

What is all that gear even doing for Ani DiFranco? It's certainly not writing songs. That Neon Vines performance, though!

I don’t know about now, but back in Austin about 20 years ago Ani and her partner were real home studio rats and he had quite a decent set up for what was available at the time. He had some nice microphones and a pair of Distressors. I think the first I had ever seen? Can’t remember, but they were just starting to show up in studios at the time.

I mention the Distressors because there are quite a few of them in that wall of gear, so if they still work together, that might just be his gear, and if not, then his gear choices definitely rubbed off on her.

I also assume her studio gets filled with more people during non-pandemic times. I haven't kept close tabs on her in 10-15 years, but she has at times had very large and diverse backing bands, so her large setup was probably built to accommodate that.

Yeah, now I can see it! No idea why I couldn't before because other people clearly could.

What did you do on the ceiling there? Looks like some soundproofing.

Those are heavy moving blankets I've had up for years. I plan to take that down and do the ceiling in wood as well. I'm not trying to soundproof the room, because that would be costly and damn near impossible. I'm going for more of a sound treatment/inspirational space thing.
