recording to garageband on my iphone7 so many questions

Hey guys
So i've been recording lots of ambient stuff directly to my phone and now i am apparently doing a band with a few other people via internet sharing so far it's tough to describe but at the heart of every song is a loop, usually something super shoegazey with reverse reverb
anyway....I've decided to go all in and get an interface to record straight up on it but I am anti savvy with this new tech stuff. I know i need an adaper if i go away from irig and honestly i want to do more than guitar shit with the interface i'll wind up with. I was looking at the behringer um2 as an idea

any of you have experience with this or any ideas of what i should go with?

Why are we recording to the phone and not a computer?

You can transfer GarageBand projects from iOs to MacOS.

You could transfer those to Logic, if you had Logic, if you wanted.

I don't have logic, i don't have money for a computer at the moment either as I am in the middle of a real life upheaval but i have been writing a lot of material for the april rpm challenge and want to finish a record i'm doing with a friend via the internet
I figured i could get a splitter for a usb input and like the behringer UM2 interface or something to complete projects with then later i could use that same interface with whatever mac product i get if we get a 2nd stimulus check. the 1st one is already going to stuff

Right, I got you. I just thought you probably had some kind of computer to be working on that would be better than a phone.

So, probably not any point to buying a better interface than iRig, your phone will only do so much and the iRig probably does it about as good as anything at this point.

Is the Behringer idea to be able to record vocals? What exactly are you looking to be able to add to your current setup?

Just looking to be able to add some guitars/bass/keys and vox
I am sure i can do that with irig but i still need to buy the same adapter and the price point is more or less the same
we're talking sub $100
the behringer unit has an xlr input the irig does not

I have a computer, a 2011 macbook pro, it's past the point of updates and the version of garageband currently on my phone is WAY beyond what this OS will run

High Sierra is an operating system for your Macbook Pro, I think it's the last one that you would be able to run on that machine.

If you were on that, I would be able to check into the version of GarageBand that you could run. I don't think you can run the latest, but you might be able to get pretty close.

If you got something that was compatible with your GarageBand on your phone, or close enough, then maybe the projects could be exported.

I have an iMac, that is about the age of your computer and I think it runs on one of the Sierra iOS, it may be High Sierra. It doesn’t update anymore, but it works fine. I had to buy an older version of Logic for it, which was expensive, hard to find and took forever to install. I don’t recommend going that route.

It seems like Garage Band would already be loaded on your computer - it seems like it was already on mine, but I don’t use it, so I’m not sure. If it isn’t, a version that your computer will run may not be available on the App Store anymore, which is why I bought the older version of Logic.

Besides getting a version that will work , the main problem I would think is if the stuff that you have done on the newer GarageBand on your phone, will be backwards compatible with an older version of GarageBand on your computer. That’s something to think about or research before you get too deep into that idea.

I’ve never used iRig or GarageBand, but I would think that another interface would be a good idea, as long as it’s compatible with GarageBand and/or your phone.

Sometimes Apple loads GarageBand on all the computers, sometimes they don't. It's usually been free, sometimes it hasn't been, right now I think it is so definitely update your Macbook Pro to the latest OS and then log in to the App Store and get the Garage Band that you can run. The App Store will tell you what the compatibility is.

Go to your Macbook Pro, click on the Apple on the top left of the screen, and on the drop down select "About This Mac". Then you'll see the OS you are running. Let me know what that is.
