Argh, and I’m tempted to go to the Eagles tomorrow in Hyde Park. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss supporting was always the draw, but £100 for crappy sound & an uninspiring fake festival feel put me off.

And Converge & Chelsea Wolfe on Tuesday…

Perhaps the thought of going to gigs is better than the experience. I often have tickets & don’t actually go. I hate crowds, so quite often a trek across town to stand around with loud, excited people makes me feel worse than that satisfaction of seeing bands play live.

I've been having a bit of an extended run of gigs, now that things are opening up again. In the last few months I've seen Therapy?, Blondie, Larkin Poe, Karkara, Confidence Man, Gary Numan, Meshuggah, Del Amitri and Nine Inch Nails. Next up is Chrysta Bell in Edinburgh, and I've just realised that St Vincent is playing the following evening, and I'm tempted. In a couple of weeks time, my girlfriend is dragging me (admittedly with only mild resistance) to see Duran Duran and Nile Rogers in London. I had a bit of a dilemma about maybe doing the Pearl Jam/Pixies/Cat Power show as well, but ultimately against it for wallet-related reasons.

Gonna watch that set this morning- watched a load yesterday.

Another dilemma for the list.

They were great - I was a bit wary as it's not my normal scene, but they nailed it. Completely daft (and well aware of it) and full of energy. The crowd was well up for it too, which I imagine makes a big difference. I've watched their Glastonbury set, which was pretty much up to the same standards, but strange seeing them in daylight. Janet's light-up disco bra didn't quite have the same effect.

Both Chrysta Bell and St Vincent were pretty amazing. I'm very happy that I decided to pick up tickets for St Vincent - last time we saw her was on the tour for the "St Vincent" album, and my girlfriend wasn't impressed with the very (intentionally) contrived staging and choreography. This time was a whole lot more fun with the whole sleazy 70s funk thing going on.

Plus! We bumped into St Vincent's musical director and bass-playing superhero Justin Meldal-Johnsen out and about the day before the gig - I'm a big fan of him since the Beck days.

Another one to add to the list - Flipper with Mike Watt on bass and vocals, in a tiny Glasgow basement and the end of July.

Kinda slowly getting back into seeing music live after 10 years or so. Ritual Howls played near me a month or so back and were great, Offset friendly too!
The local music venue to me has mostly tribute bands, some good, but August they've got Gwar playing, then Therapy? later on in the year. More excited about Therapy? as I used to love them in the mid 90s.

I've been real lucky, got to see Bob Mould on Friday, Kurt Vile on Monday, and tomorrow I am going to see Spiritualized, who may or may not be my favorite music act of all time.

In the next 2 months, we are seeing Lord Huron (this month) and Death Cab For Cutie (next month). Have killer seats for Death Cab, and we are excited for both! Will post pictures after!

i just saw the National not long ago, and they were fantastic! i've definitely heard some live recordings where they weren't at the TOP of their game, but they were great! They are a great band

We saw Lord Huron Saturday night. Easily one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Amazing energy, fantastic performances, and seriously the coolest lighting show I've ever seen.

The stage was set up like a desert scene, with risers and a hill/mountain scene in front of each riser. The front of each riser had a huge line of color-changing LEDs. The bassist, singer, and one of the guitarists were spread out on the main stage/lowest layer, the second guitarist and occasional piano player on the second, and the drummer on the highest layer on the right. The back of the stage was setup like a sun/moon, which would get lit up sometimes like a setting sun/moon.







The bassist was having some trouble, and switched to an upright bass with some sort of pickup. Once they got his rig working again, he would switch between a few different 4-string basses and a couple different Bass VIs.

He also had a customized P-Bass with a lefty neck. I've never seen a Fender bass with a reverse headstock, but I really like it.

The bassist would play these really deep and ambient pieces between the songs, and it was SO good. They were one of the stranger bands live where they were even better live. I would LOVE a live album from these guys.

I saw them a few weeks back & it was an amazing show. That bass he is playing is a Moniker bass. I was staring at it all night. It was gorgeous & he was a great bass player.

I don't know if it was just because he was having some technical problems, but did he break out the upright bass at your show too?

And thanks for the info! I'll have to look up the Moniker bass.
