Is there a guitar equivalent of Erik Satie ?

Post by windmill » Wed May 20, 2015 4:40 pm

After a fossick through Shadowplays posts turned up a Satie tune

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4ElvJqEQRU

Erik Satie - Gnossiennes No 1

I got to wondering are there any guitar players who could be regarded as an equivalent to Satie ?

The one that comes to mind initially is The Durutti Column ( Vinnie O'Reilly)

Any others ?

The late-great Phil Rosheger, a classical guitarist, played some Satie-like stuff, sometimes. I think some recordings of him are available somewhere. Also, the "Diary" album, by Ralph Towner is somewhat Satie-like.

Gymnopedie No. 1 is my single favorite piece of music of all time. Just piano, the slower the better. Apparently Satie is considered to be one of the forefathers of ambient music?

Anyway, far from a direct comparison, but I can get a similar "pleasantly bummed melancholy sense of wonder" feeling from certain songs by Neil Halstead (Digging Shelters: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xijIj-N9fs4" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and Mark Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters (Admiral Fell Promises: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rj4wIxtOCBA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

Wish I could play like that! A lot of this just has to do with the timbre of these guys' voices that just resonates with me. May be worth a shot...

Gary

You might find some of Tom Verlaine's instrumental stuff interesting- for example:

It's from the "Around" album. There are tracks on that album and also "Warm And Cool" that are heading in that direction.
Can't think of any tracks in particular, but Bill Frisell's back catalogue could be worth checking out....

Loren Mazzacane Connors, in all his forms. He's released a massive amount of material, but here's an LP of his on youtube for starters.

You might like Jonny Nash's recent LP - Exit Strategies or maybe look at July Skies. (OT but btw if you like July Skies look at Epic45 who has just reissued some of his records on vinyl)

An old record that always makes me thing of Satie isDeux Filles - Silence and Wisdom I may even have heard about Eric Satie in a review of this or perhaps it was a review of In Gardens Where We Feel Secure, it was a long time ago and I'm fucked if I know for sure.

It's a wee bit too jazzy and he does go off on one quite a lot but a lot ofJohn Abercrombie - Timelessis very minimal and in any case it's a great record.

The most recent Grouper LP Ruinshas a dank autumnal Satie vibe to it but it's all piano.

+1 on July Skies and Virginia Astley. And while we're embracing the piano equivalent of Erik Satie (not really), you might enjoy the laid-back parts of Colin Newman's Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish if you're not already steeped in it.

Edit: a quick scan reveals it's not really that Satie-esque at all, but this is....a little bit, anyway.

While not what I was looking for, which is a composer or artist who writes Satie-like pieces for guitar

After an intensive youtubing operation, (ie looking beyond the first page, actually on the 3rd page), there was discovered a version of Gymnopedie No1 on an offset !!

I've bought a couple of records on the new label Hood Faire (Orphan Racker - The Sound of Insects and Dean McPhee -Fatima's Hand) which is a joint venture between Sam McLoughlin (N.Racker) and David Chatton Barker (David Orphan) of Folklore Tapes renown. Anyway both are excellent but the simple repetitive clean guitar of Dean Mc Phee might fit in here at least tangentially.

Dean McPhee - Glass Hills

Dean McPhee - Smoke And Mirrors

Btw if you ever get the chance to see N.Racker pull some moves with his mad home made Heath Robinson instruments live you are in for a real treat.
