Re: The Official Sonic Youth thread.....
Getting really into SY lately. I just bought Washing Machine Yesterday, and I'm really liking it. So far I have Dirty, Sister, Daydream Nation, EVOL and Washing Machine. What am I urgently missing out on?
I'd love to get my hands on some SYR stuff, too.

There is no problem so bad that you can't make it worse.

I'd get A Thousand Leaves. Really like that album. Murray Street is good too.

From Sonic Youth's site for those who may have missed it.Sonic Youth’s soundtrack of the French film ‘Simon Werner a Disparu’ will be released in 2011 as a cd, lp (w/ download card) and as a digital download. The download will be available January 25 (via midheaven.com) with the cd + lp releases to follow soon after in February, 2011.

I'd just like to be a douche for a minute and brag that I've scored original Blast First pressings of Bad Moon Rising, EVOL, and Sister in the past few months.
Seriously, though, one of my favourite bands. I like the fact that they're still around making good music. I'm just starting to get into the SYR stuff and so far it's really good.

I got an original Blast First pressing of The Whitey Album two weeks ago. Delighted!
EDIT: Oh,and I snagged two copies of the Kim Gordon/Lydia Lunch side-project Harry Crews' only album Naked In Garden Hills on cassette too! Both were unopened!

I haven't looked into the SYR stuff too much; anything exceedingly cool I should look for to start me out?

The first two are the best, in my opinion.noisepunk wrote:I haven't looked into the SYR stuff too much; anything exceedingly cool I should look for to start me out?
Yeah, I take my baby down to the street and I buy him a soda-pop.

Re: The Official Sonic Youth thread.....
After a several year hiatus from SY, this past fall I started listening to them again in large doses and found that I like Bad Moon Rising more than I had ever previously (....just can't get enough of Death Valley '69). I don't know if it's urgent, but check the album out.El Pr0n wrote:Getting really into SY lately. I just bought Washing Machine Yesterday, and I'm really liking it. Watched this fantastic cover of Karen Revisited the other day and figured this thread needs to be revived.
I remember being that kid when I was 16... 17 years ago. I'd have a blast playing Diamond Sea. I'm super lucky I got to see them play live a couple of times, and it's really cool to see a teenager now being maybe even more into their music then I was back then.

For how unconventional their songs are, you might not guess that SY songs would work that well as covers. But that is a fantastic cover. I think also that it's a testament to how great the songs are. Here's my favorite cover!

I love the album Hold That Tiger, recorded from a show in Japan. Killer versions of songs from Sister, Tom Violence, and some Ramones tunes.
