Blake Mills Appreciation Thread

Post by DWBH » Wed Aug 13, 2014 2:05 pm

I've discovered Blake Mills a couple of months ago, and he's my favourite guitarist right now. Tremendous good taste. His technique is immense, and he puts it to the best use.

His new album is out this September, can't wait :w00t:

He's an amazing guitarist, right up there with Nels Cline IMO; very inventive and melodic. I'm not so into his solo stuff as much as his contributions to other peoples' music (check out YouTube clips of Fiona Apple's last tour, for example). But yeah, I love his playing.

I'm right on board with this!

I have been greatly enjoying his first solo album "break mirrors". Some of the tracks on there put a lump in my throat and raise the hairs on the back of my neck. Especially "Cheers" and "Like it's Something".

Also really looking forward to hearing his new one. One of the things that I love on Break Mirrors is the drumming courtesy of Danielle Haim, who I understand is no longer playing with Blake. Be interesting to see how much difference this makes.

This interview was what really got me interested in Blake's playing, and also got me excited about Teles again -

yeah, i was wondering about those amps. how are they? what do they use? 6v6s?

Btw, the album is awesome. There's no distribution in europe which sucks though. I'll probably buy it on ebay

I saw him sit in with Dawes last year and just tastefully played inbetween lines. Amazing. I think he was in a band Simon Dawes before they became Dawes. Good stuff.

the amps have a 2 6v6 power section, and are basically a 5e3 design...but made in the late 40s - early 50s. huge tweed tone! and cheap as hell while no one knows about them. opened for a band called the wild feathers from nashville...one of the guitar players had one that was redone by the same dude who's built them for blake. he said the guy has built them for dawes too, and even keith richards owns one now. maybe jackson browne too...i forget. when asked in an interview, blake said he was trying to keep them a secret...which of course made me want to find out even more what they were.

Ya, he's really an amazing guitarist. I'm definitely into that Laurel Canyon/Echo Park music scene with all those newer musicians like Blake, Dawes, Father John Misty, and Jonathan Wilson collaborating with classic rock guys like Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, etc. There are a lot of exceptional musicians floating around in that scene.

YES!

I found myself searching for old projector amps 15 minutes later.

How do you appreciate Blake Mills more? Add Fiona Apple. :-*
