You don't have to feel alone anymore! I absolutely love Big Country. One of my all time favorite bands and one of the reasons I play guitar. Was just listening to Steeltown this afternoon. "Just a Shadow" is one of my favorite songs.

This game is harder than it looks - really had to rack my brains. Eventually found this in my 'liked videos' on Youtube.
Monotony - Back To The Castle
The band also trade as Sauna Youth (possibly also nobody's favourite band, who knows) but I prefer them when they swap instruments and become Monotony. So post-punk I expect to hear John Peel saying "Those were Monotony" after it finishes. Love that guy's stage presence, and the fact that he always makes me think of a character out of Trumptonshire.

Number One Cup. Their first two albums seem pretty heavily Pavement influenced in hindsight, but I wasn't really into Pavement back then so I didn't know. Less jokey and a bit more accessible.

I know them. Saw them live in MO. The drummer had a massive kick drum. Good band. I have a copy of Wrecked By Lions around somewhere.

Re: The Band You Love That No One Else Seems to Care About
The title of this thread is basically the fundamental dilemma of the 80s/90s.
(full disclosure: I was friends with the guys who ran their label, Flydaddy, which has a pretty stellar lineup from the era: Olivia Tremor Control, Cardinal, Richard Davies, The Moles (!), Witchhazel, Sideshow, etc.) The split with Red Red Meat (based around a cowbell loop) was good too.
Some Seattle bands that got overlooked:
Mars Accelerator (if modest mouse were really good at math and loved the Swirlies. Plastic Afterglow should have been a hit)
Welcome (sort of Pavement + MBV + GBV?)
Juno
Satisfact
Lync (Olympia)
I just listened to Big Country last week! (The Crossing is so good and sad, once you get beyond the ubiquitous CHA! of the singles; I think there's some common ground between that one, The Chameleons and some early U2, too. I lost the thread after Steeltown though)
I actually like album #3 (people people why are we fighting) the best, maybe as they seemed to be getting their feet under them more.

I used to be a total freak for whatever Jah Wobble was up to, for a long time. This is post-PIL stuff. Loved the bass playing, loved the adventure, loved how he mixed it all up, never found anyone to share it with. Alas, Mr. Wobble seems like he fell down into fart jazz wormhole and I stopped paying attention, but the old stuff was cool. On a side note, also had a long Bill Laswell phase and never spotted anyone else who dug it the way I did.

It's even lonelier being an American fan of The Style Council. I love when the instrumental smooth jazz version of My Ever Changing Moods comes on in my local grocery store.stevejamsecono wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2022 7:08 pmBig Country for sure.
Being an American fan of The Jam is pretty lonely too.

I love when that happens. The odd hip choice in the Grocery Store Playlist.mcbrandt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 1:32 pmIt's even lonelier being an American fan of The Style Council. Bardo Pond. They totally blew my mind when I discovered them (10ish?) years ago. Still think they’re great and not talked about much.
Also Lungfish. IMHO, a notable Discord band that somehow nobody seems to remember (unlike, pretty much, any act associated with Ian MacKaye). I guess Daniel Higgs’ vocals may not be everyone’s cup of tea. He’s a brilliant lyricist, though, and quite a character.

Hating The Beatles was a common thing in my late-90s local punk scene - something I couldn't understand. It's mostly people who have never listened to an entire Beatles album who say they don't like them because they don't know the creative bandwith of the band, but only the hits that were on the "1" compilation.

Oh I'm with you on Lungfish, even got to see them live in a insanely hot small room in the early 90s. Higgs did that gig in a knee length wool coat! That band made so many records and deeply explored how minimal you could get and still have a song. At their best, Lungfish always had a bit of Old Testament End Times to them. I still listen to them regularly and go for Lungfish more than Fugazi these days, at least when it comes to Dischord jams.HedonismBot wrote: ↑Tue Nov 08, 2022 9:08 pmBardo Pond. Hey Judy. Picked up a tape of their album "What Now" at a local record store because the cover looked interesting. I think they label themselves "cowpunk" which I think is pretty apt. I'm also a sucker for 3 piece bands
