Saw Guided By Voices when I was in college at Ohio U. Got to see Brainiac that year too, about a year before the singer died in a car wreck, just after they were signed to a major. Such a shame. I'm a big matthew Sweet fan and was supposed to drive from Louisville KY to St Louis last Saturday to see him play the whole Girlfriend album w/a friend of mine from Cali, but she came down w/both strep AND scarlet fever that Monday, the day after buying her plane ticket. So neither of us saw the show. I did see him play on the Sunshine Lies tour (which came out on my birthday that year, a nice present) and he was great.stig wrote:Oh God... so many! Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard, XTC, Jellyfish, The Red Button, Tame Impala, Urge Overkill, The Tubes, Robyn Hitchcock, Mitch Easter, Matthew Sweet... Can you tell I'm cycling backwards through my iPod? The Loud Family/Game Theory, The Move, Julianna Hatfield. OK, I'll stop.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is fantastic and they seem to get no publicity at all. I've been really enjoying a lot of synth pop and stuff the last year or so and groups like Neon Indian and Tesla Boy have been doing it for me. Not sure why my wife and I hadn't been listening to Kings of Leon much, given how much we like Black Rebel, but I snagged all their stuff recntly and we've both been digging that. Llistened to their first EP and all 5 albums in a row while we were playing World of Warcraft together the other night. Geeks unite!
No one ever remembers Medicine. I like all their stuff, but that first album especially. Man, that guitar is set for STUN, especially on the opening track. Just one of those albums you sink deeply into the music and drift around in.
