What did you listen to this year?
Apple Music just dropped their Replay ‘22 stats (even though we have over a month to go). Mine were heavily skewed by stuff my daughter played in the car (the number one spot was definitely hijacked) but interesting nonetheless. I wouldn’t have expected Bauhaus or Wire to rank that high. Anyway, here’s my Top Artists list. I’d love to see others.

Yeah, me too. Unfortunately, I don’t have a system in place for automatically tracking those.

Re: What did you listen to this year?
Lololol my most streamed song was Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn. I played it for a “guilty pleasures” open mic night, and apparently I listened to it a lot to learn it.
Evidently Loverboy’s Working For The Weekend did not require as careful study.

According to my Spotify, it was a big year for:
Wu-Tang Clan, (plus solo work from Raekwon and Ghostface)
Gang of Four
Talking Heads
Sonic Youth
and Nas.

To be clear, the streaming platform has never forced anything on me. My daughter on the other hand…stevejamsecono wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 7:39 amAll MP3s on my phone specifically chosen by me. Happily avoiding another year of streaming services and forced exposure to pop culture I don't want.
That said, she has good taste, and even if I would not choose to listen to this stuff on my own, it’s all objectively good music.

Apologies, my comments weren't meant as a specific judgement on yours or anyone else's taste here. More just a continued act of self curation that I prefer to when I was more regularly on Spotify and its playlist picks would throw stuff on there I didn't want to run into.blacktiger wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 10:46 amTo be clear, the streaming platform has never forced anything on me. Re: What did you listen to this year?
CDs in my car
WPRB Princeton 103.3FM...in my car.
The collected works of David Cloud Berman while drunk on night on my couch.
The following CDs had big time play in my car:
True Stories by Talking Heads (great sing along material)
Odyssey and Oracle by The Zombies (Same)
The Twin Peaks soundtrack (season one)
Actually You Can by Deerhoof got some play
Quasi's new album seems amazing (yay Janet)
My own new album about a bazillion times while recording, and mixing it. As always I get to the end and find that it sounds like shit. For the bazilyionth time I swear to myself that I'll only ever record in the lowest of low fi from now on. No sense chasing what I can't catch.
I don't really listen to music very much anymore. My car can't do aux input and I detest Spotify.
Who the fuck cares what I've listened to though? We peaked with iPods. We're now in the after times for music.

If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

We have shockingly similar musical taste. True Stories is very underrated. The movie is one of my all time favorites.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 1:46 pmCDs in my car

Been meaning to check out that new Deerhoof too.

No worries, as an Apple Music user, I actually forgot that Spotify makes suggestions and playlists for you. My friend said that his nephews like Kiss, and now they are listening to GnR and Bon Jovi based on Spotify’s suggestions
*For the record, I did like GnR BITD, before I had heard Appetite 1000 times. Never was a Bon Jovi fan, though…

Hey man, I don’t care if you don’t. Sorry for asking.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Wed Nov 30, 2022 1:46 pmWho the fuck cares what I've listened to though? We peaked with iPods. We're now in the after times for music.
Apple Music is an unlimited iPod that you pay for monthly that never crashes and loses your entire music collection. If you think iPods were a peak for anything, I can see why you’re in a bad mood. FTR, streaming is no kind of peak either, but it’s never fucked me over like THREE actual iPods did, which all mysteriously stopped working simultaneously. I guess I wasn’t quick enough to buy new hardware…

Re: What did you listen to this year?
My teen daughter’s Spotify is linked to mine, and she is the primary user, so apparently the main thing I listened to was the Hamilton soundtrack. Rise up, y’all! But I would say my top replays were:
The Asteroid No. 4
Bardo Pond
Brian Jonestown Massacre
Swervedriver
Thousandaire (thanks to an OSG thread)
Black Market Karma
Dead Meadow
Phoebe Bridgers
Bedhead
But my favorite was a newer band from the part of the South I grew up in. So as not to hijack this thread, I posted that separately in another thread as a twist on the NGD guessing game.
