what genre of music would you play if you weren't playing your current style?

what genre of music would you play if you weren't playing your current style?

Post by s_mcsleazy » Sat Sep 17, 2022 10:28 am

this was a fun conversation i was having with my musician friends recently. someone asked "yo, if you could play a genre of music that isn't the style you play in, what would it be and why?" i like the idea of playing in a horror-punk band where the singer plays into the whole "yandere" anime trope. i feel like if any genre would would with that trope, it would be horror-punk.

what about all of you? if you had to play a genre of music other than one you currently play, what would it be?

I play various kinds of indie rock, but playing bass in an old school soul band with a horn section or acoustic guitar and singing harmony in an old timey duo like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings would be great fun.

if i still had the chops, thrash metal. I grew up on metal & still listen to it. is there a sub-genre for sloppy thrash metal. maybe something along the lines of misfits' earth ad album or exploited's death before dishonour

Horror punk would indeed be great fun, distorted organ and all that. I have a soft spot for minimalist indie/slowcore (a-la Low) and Portishead style trip-hop so both would be enjoyable for me.

Oh, and being a geriatric jazz drummer would be the coolest.

A mixed-race live New Jack Swing band with the political bent of two-tone ska.

Instead of surf, I'd love to be that nonstop tremolo picker in a lo-fi black metal band. I'd LOVE that. I'd also like to play bass for instro post rock. I'd also love to be a drummer in a mid-tempo Ramonsecore band. If I ever met a breakcore person, I'd love to contribute a surf guitar in that also. Kinda like that band End.

Funk, somewhere between The Meters and Sly & the Family Stone. Guitar or bass. Or both.

I’ve always wanted to learn bluegrass guitar and pedal steel, so that’s probably my best answer.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Yeah, it would probably be Funk…or more general: funky movie soundtracks…
I‘d also like to have a real surf-rock trio… maybe with ad on horns…

Probably go back to playing some sort of upbeat, reverby garage rock and psych.

For me it’d probably be some kind of awful British Americana ripoff.

Or I’d love to play guitar in a backing band for someone like Jenny Lewis or Angus & Julia Stone. I guess that’s sorta similar- kind poppy, lightly driven stuff where I could use vintage amps.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?
