Life Of The Record (and other podcasts about the making of great albums)
Hey, fellow music nerds. If you are into this kind of thing I HIGHLY recommend this podcast.
They just dropped a nearly two hour long one on Big Star’s #1 record.
I’ve devoured all of the other episodes, even ones on records I don’t necessarily know or care much about and still enjoyed it all. The Episodes on Civilian (Wye Oak) and Mount Eerie (The Microphones) have been my favorites so far.
Why I think this works so well is it’s so well edited. The interviewer’s questions and ramblings have been completely removed and it just has a good flow to it.
If anyone has any other suggestions to podcasts along these lines I’d love to hear them. I’m aware of Song Exploder, and do check that out from time to time. Matador’s Revisionist History is ok too, but often a little short on substance.

Neat recommendation!
In sort of a similar vein, I usually really enjoy Todd in the Shadows' two mini-documentary series Trainwreckords (about highly anticipated albums that bombed), and One Hit Wonderland (about one hit wonders; but more interestingly, their history both before and after their hit).

I will absolutely be listening to that.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

That Big Star one was a lot better than I had thought it would be, I sort of assumed I would know all the stuff already.
It was great hearing from Jody Stephens, who seems like a really great guy and is one of my favorite drummers.
I kind of did some other reading, and on this page there is a song from Chris Bell and Jody Stephens before Big Star existed. It's a good tune.

Oh, and the Elliott Smith and Heatmiser episodes make for very interesting back to back listening IMO.

Yes! Lots of great episodes already mentioned but I’ll also throw in the Replacements and Grandaddy episodes.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Tue Aug 02, 2022 12:18 pmOh, and the Elliott Smith and Heatmiser episodes make for very interesting back to back listening IMO.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but another YouTube channel that I enjoy makes mini documentaries on obscure old music genres from around the world... it's called Bandsplaining if you're interested.
Though unlike my previous recommendation (Todd in the Shadows) which works well listening to just the audio, Bandsplaining tends to use a lot of visuals so it doesn't work quite as well when only listening.

The guy that produces that podcast, Dan, is a friend of a bunch of people I went to college with. It's awesome to see the success it's had and I really need to remember to listen to it. The Let Go one might be just the thing for me as I sure do love that record.

I really liked the one on the of Montreal record, which was new to me, an interesting story and probably the best music I've heard in a long, long time.

That's a good one! Also highly recommend Satanic Panic in the Attic and Lousy With Sylvianbriar if you dig Hissing Fauna.

100%. All great records.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.
