The Mars Volta teasing…something

Post by Russell1982 » Sun Jun 19, 2022 12:46 am

Not sure if there are many/any fans here but The Mars Volta have been teasing something happening over the next three days.

On Friday I saw they posted a short video on their YouTube channel with these dates, the video was then deleted shortly after.
They’ve since tweeted some coordinates and a phrase in a language nobody seems to be able to translate.

New album? Some concerts? A ritualistic gathering? A picnic? Who knows?

Their night in Manchester touring Frances The Mule was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.
3 hours solid with a peacefully orchestrated stage invasion in the middle. A proper brain-melter!!

I would have loved to have seen them on the Frances tour. I saw them at the roundhouse in London touring Bedlam in Goliath and again at Somerset House touring Octahedron, both amazing experiences.

A band I can never quite get into beyond their debut. Crazy clever stuff though.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I actually feel the same way, generally.

I missing their "Deloused...." tour & made a point of not making the same mistake a second time, even though getting back to Leeds from Manchester afterwards was a bit of a nightmare.

I consider that first album one of the greatest psychedelic-prog rock* records of all time.

* Kind of impossible to categorise them really. I mean, who else sounds even close to them? Such a unique, creative & ultra-talented bunch.

Anytime I've tried to explain TMV to someone I've had to say that their genre is 'The Mars Volta'. It's the most accurate definition of what they sound like :D

I think that’s only exacerbated by the fact that each album is so different. I remember after their first album I was trying to explain what they were like to a friend and all I could come up with was “pink floyd on speed.” But then each subsequent album they just upped the weirdness factor and expanded more and more.
I remember hating amputechture when it was first released but then was driving home from Lincoln to Kent and decided to put it on and just played the album through and realised it was incredible.

So it turns out the coordinates are for a strange art installation where people are given a three minute preview of new music. Trust Volta to make their return in this way.

is it an unpopular opinion to say the mars volta is fine but at the drive-in was the better band? TMV is fine but i can never listen to more than 1 album where as i even think the last at the drive-in album was good.

I can imagine that’s actually a pretty popular opinion. I think at the drive in had a pretty huge fan base and I’d even argue more people are potentially more familiar with at the drive in than the
Mars Volta.
I’m the opposite however, I enjoy at the drive in but I love the Mars Volta.

I'm in this camp of people. I loved At the Drive-In when I was teen! I was drawn to them as a mexican-american kid really into punk/hardcore and seeing a bunch of latino kids making "weird" music for people from those communities got me really stoked.

I'm not a huge Mars Volta fan past their first EP and Deloused. Both of those are great, but they lost me after. I just hope whatever new music they are teasing with Mars Volta is not as bad as the new ATDI album they released. Oof.

i don't actually think interalia was that bad. i think it's like what happened with post-reunion refused in that both bands had all time classic albums then broke up before they could build on that sound, this lead to a bunch of smaller bands picking at the bones and expanding the sound from there. that style of post-hardcore ended up mutating so much over time that by the time both bands picked up where they left off, it kinda didn't sound as fresh as it once did. i will also say that in both cases, both bands were missing a key member which didn't help.

but i do think it's got some good songs. no wolf like the present, governed by contagions, continuum, incurably innocent, hostage stamps. i even really like call broken arrow, could have used a bit more work but it's still good. although i do think if jim ward was there, they could have been much better.

i did see them live around that time btw. they weren't great tbh, my friend said when we left "wow, that was the worst coheed show i ever went to"

That album and songs aren't bad, but his voice isn't what it once was. Particularly noticeable when I saw them live a few years back.

I think it's always been a bit iffy due to amount of energy he puts into his onstage antics.

It's kinda frustrating, finding amazing live performances on Youtube that are slightly ruined by his out of tune/exhausted vocals.

Colour me interested. i got into TMV first largely because of my age - I dig them and enjoyed circling back and discovering ATDI subsequently. I even didn't mind Antemasque...

TMV are where it's at for me. De-Loussed is probably a top 15 album for me and I love Omar's playing. Every time I listen to them I hear something new in his playing and his arrangements. If the new material is in the ballpark of De-Loussed or Frances I'll be a happy man.
