Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon Is Performing at Lollapalooza 2022

Post by bluemonday » Wed Mar 23, 2022 10:30 am

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon is set to perform at Lollapalooza 2022.

A spokesperson of the investment bank confirmed that he will be playing a DJ set under his musical alias “D-sol,” which he initially changed to his legal name last year upon the release of his single “Learn to Love Me.” The rep also shared that Solomon tends to DJ four to six events a year with all of the profits going to charity; he previously DJed for an Amazon event in 2019 and a Sports Illustrated Super Bowl party.

In a 2017 Goldman Sachs podcast, the CEO shared, “kind of stumbled into it as a hobby, and now I just do it for fun.”

D-sol will be joining the likes of Metallica, Dua Lipa, J. Cole, Green Day, Doja Cat, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Baby, Kygo, The Kid Laroi, Big Sean, Still Woozy, Cordae, YG, Dominic Fike, Don Toliver, Glass Animals, Coi Leray, King Princess, Charli XCX, Denzel Curry, Caroline Polachek, Muna, 100 gecs, Young Nudy and several others across the four-day festival.

Lollapalooza 2022 takes place at Chicago’s Grant Park from July 28 to July 31.

I thought this was strange. I don't know anything about him or his talent. It's just not what you expect from someone his age and station who made 35 million last year to be doing this. On the other hand it could be encouraging for lots of us who have day jobs (even "regular" ones) but could nevertheless have the dream of a successful musical avocation.

My issue with this is that it smells of pay for play. That slot should have gone to a more deserving artist or band that actually needs the exposure, not some wealthy hobbyist.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Yeah, I'm pretty firm on my belief that you shouldn't be able to use the title 'DJ' unless you actually jockey discs.

People who just play a glorified digital playlist set need to find themselves a new name.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I was curious and found a clip of him spinning on YouTube. Honestly not terrible IMO, but not an area of expertise for me. People should be able to have different sides to themselves.

Cynically, this choice to book him has brought a lot of free publicity to the event which might have factored into the choice.

Still, I basically agree with you on this.

I totally agree on this. His status shouldn't factor into his side projects, it's just a valuable slot that someone else could benefit more from IMO.

For sure. This could be an incredible break for someone else who could actually benefit from it.

Is Lollapalooza really where new acts are going for exposure? Isn't it already kind of pay to play? This kind of fits with my understanding of what that brand has become. I listened to one track and it seemed fine. But if you told me that song was Dua Lipa or Doja Cat or Machine Gun Kelly, I'd believe you because I haven't kept up. It's better than Vin Diesel's single anyway. Well, maybe.

When I was a kid, the custodian at school always mopped with D-Sol. I can still remember the piney smell. Brings back memories of greasy yeast rolls and getting punched by bullies.

Tempting as it is to be a hater, I agree that people don't get to be defined by their day job. Also Michael Caine's chill-out DJ sets immediately sprang to mind.

I think this assumes that he got this gig based purely on merit, and therefore (talented) others with day jobs could aspire to do the same. I could be wrong of course but I think in this particular case there is more to how he got the gig than his DJ skills, in a way that puts this out of reach for most everyone else with a day job.

"D-Sol" how much more proof do we need to believe in his genius? A moniker like D-Sol took years to formulate and ferment in his mind.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Yeah corporate events like Amazon and the Sports Illustrated Super Bowl party are plum gigs that are probably out of reach for most of his musical peers who don't have the connections he obviously does in that world. Add to that the novelty factor (and I don't mean that disparagingly) because let's face it, the reason this is a headline is exactly because he is the CEO. The charity aspect makes it all a feel good vibe that doesn't hurt either. Still, if he sucked t wouldn't work, but apparently he is good at it.
