Your favorite band/artist that emerged in the last 5 years?

Post by Ceylon » Wed Feb 02, 2022 2:39 am

I've very much gotten stuck listening to the same music for the past years, and even when I discover something new that gets added to the rotation, it's rarely something more modern than, say, the turn of the millenium. The exception I guess is hip hop, where my favorite artist has been around since about 1999 but where every new release to this day is more interesting than the last.

That being said, I don't follow a lot of labels, reviewers, DJs or really any other channels where I'd get exposed to fresh new music. But I would like to. Ordinarily i just wait until something piques my interest before I look it up and I do find a lot of cool stuff, but it's a bit of a limited approach.

So, in this thread, recommend me (and anyone else reading) your favorite band or artist that has emerged in the past five years. For extra bonus internet points, recommend me your favorite way of coming into contact with new music.

Pretty please, obviously.

Just a couple of favorites that come to mind quickly:

Dummy

Vanishing Twin

Fontaines DC

My usual places to explore are Spotify, Youtube and KEXP

Dry Cleaning
The Goon Sax
Drahla
Aldous Harding
Tropical Fuck Storm

I've picked up quite a few new bands (to me) in the last year or two mainly from Spotify, but when I checked a few of them had been around a bit longer than 5 years, but here's some of them anyhow.

Protomartyr
Mourn
Mitski
Corridor
Wave Machines
Deaf Wish
Love of Diagrams
Ought
Preoccupations
Xiu Xiu
Forth Wanderers
Cindy Lee

Most of these I found from Spotify, I follow their 'Fans also like ..' links across multiple bands, giving each a quick listen, it does unearth the occasional gem. I also listen to Radio 6 in the UK and always keep an eye out on forums and websites for band recommendations.

Fontaines DC
Dummy
Julie Shapiro
Parquet Courts
Weed
Diat
Dreamdecay
Facs
Flyying Colours
DeafCult
Deaf Wish
Japanese Breakfast
Mitski

(some of these are older than 5 years but still merit mention)
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

They do exist longer - but I got to know about them 5 years ago a year after they released their second album... still among my very favorite bands that I hope to share the stage once - or at least see live: THE WYTCHES - I found them accidentally when I was searching for bands that would play "surf doom" what I planned on making with my own Band before our first ever rehearsal...

Another band that is big now - but I've discovered them way back in their early years: SLIFT - really good heavy psychedelic stuff. We played two shows with them back in 2019 - now they fill stadiums... haha. or let's say big open air venues and play sold out tours...

I discover a lot of "new" music on KEXP or similar live sessions and from Line ups of festivals I may want to visit... :-P

Oh and one band that I really love was actually played on the radio on my drive back home from the studio when we were recording...ELIZABETH COLOUR WHEEL Very noisy, dramatic, intense. Great stuff

Looking through things I’ve been listening to lately my favorite “new” artists have still been around 10-ish years. :fp:

My younger bandmate is always mentioning some new artist and I usually look them up. He has more pop taste than me though.

I check out KEXP live performances on YouTube, listen to Sound Opinions (a mix of new and old music discussion).

I will say that streaming has gotten me into exploring older stuff that I’ve missed. I very much enjoy listening to things that are new to me even if they aren’t the very latest.

I’m digging all the chill indie/dream pop type stuff that kids are putting out. Loads of women in bands killing it: Bleach Lab, New Dad, Lunar Vacation, Slow Pulp etc.

Also absolutely in love with what Marina Allen & Sylvie are doing. Lovely, retro folky stuff.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I'm a little prejudice because I know them and we share a drummer, but Witches Meadow.

that last album hit me so fucking hard. saying that, my favorite song is the boy considers his haircut. i dunno why but that line "i wanna find a haircut that fits me that hasn't be co-opted by nazis" just hits me so hard.

it's weird but i feel like spanish love songs feels like the mood of most of my friends around my age to the point where of my friends told me "dude, that hit way too hard, i loved it but in the same way as crying in the bathtub"

if you're around the age of 30...... check this out.

The Royal They from NYC. Biased because we're buds, but those two records utterly rip while still being full of memorable songwriting.

I started on a synthwave kick a few years back, and two bands I've come away from it loving are GUNSHIP and Korine.
Each GUNSHIP track sounds like it came straight off the soundtrack of a different 80's movie, and Korine sounds like a synthwave version of The Cure.

Already mentions, but FACS - discovered by accident courtesy of a thread in the Effects section here. Not sure how I'd not gotten on to them sooner, but so happy that I'm now in the know.

Dry Cleaning - via KEXP via the Youtube algorithm.

BIG | BRAVE - Honourable mention I guess because their 1st album came out in 2015 but close enough. Clued in by a friend.

On the friends front I’m a big fan of Loose Wing. Claire Tucker has put our two solid solo releases too.
