Recommend some twee 80’s jangle, please.
I stumbled into Close Lobsters the other day, and that led me down the path of Sarah Records comps, C86 playlist, etc… I’ve been a Soft Boys fan for a long time and recently went down a bit of an XTC rabbit hole. I even broke out The Housemartins for a bit. Apparently I’m really in need of some sunny shit to listen to as the weather has been so nasty lately.
I realize this could potentially go any number of directions and that’s fine. I’m particularly interested in older stuff though.

Of the top of my head, I recommend Felt, McCarthy and Aztec Camera. Oh, and Lloyd Cole & the Commotions and Orange Juice. The Bats, The Clean and The Go-Betweens: they aren't British, but they often employ that sound. From the US, you have Game Theory, The Feelies and Let's Active. I also love Beat Happening: they're not jangly, but they're very twee.

Girls at our Best! and Dolly Mixture definitely come to mind, although they predate that stuff a little. Both great though. Dolly Mixture especially was a recent and happy discovery. 'Demonstration Tapes' blew me away and I'm shocked they aren't more well known.

Really digging The Bats so far. That’s right up my alley for sure. I like the bass playing. Not sure why that’s so often overlooked in this kind of music.

They seem to get short shrift compared to the other Flying Nun bands for sure. I feel like most people go for the Clean, Chills, or Verlaines first.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:58 pmReally digging The Bats so far. That’s right up my alley for sure. It's funny—I've had several occasions where I've played "North by North" and someone has randomly declared that this was their absolute favorite song but they thought no one else knew The Bats. That bass line is unreal good.stevejamsecono wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 8:07 pmThey seem to get short shrift compared to the other Flying Nun bands for sure. I heard The Goon Sax recently and some songs reminded me of 80's NZ/Australian bands (the guitarist/singer is the son of one of the Go-Betweens). I had no idea dolewave, with which they've been associated, was a thing. I suspect someone here could jump in with more useful info about it, and from the playlists I heard, it sounds like (as with most genre labels) it groups a lot of bands that are more different than alike, but some playlists turned up bands with a similar jangle and drive to The Bats and The Clean, so that might be a rabbit hole to go down
The Connells and Guadalcanal Diary? Maybe less upbeat than what you're looking for but also jangly college rock from that era. Some Paisley Underground stuff like True West and The Three O'Clock might also work.

My all-time favourite "sunny" song, even though they probably hated being classed as twee...
My Bloody Valentine - Strawberry Wine
