Greg Sage/Wipers...wow
Been listening to the Wipers more than any other band recently and i'm just really in love with their sound.
Obvs is this real, youth of america and over the edge are amazing but i'm really loving land of the lost and follow blind too. They seem like underrated records for sure. Ofc wipers overall are still quite an underrated band.

Many years ago I got a mixtape of the wipers from a colleague and since then I am a huge fan. My actual fave is land of the lost.

I didn’t get it at first either. Is This Real? is what finally got to me.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 4:13 amhell yeah. i'll admit, it took me a few listens to get used to the wipers but once i was, i fell in love. my favorite song is actually sinking as a stone. some great guitar work there.

Is This Real? was the first album of theirs I had heard, and I was blown away. I bought it for $8 at Best Buy, no idea why it was there, but man is it ever an incredible album start to finish.
The next two are also great.

I heard of them first in a j mascis interview a few years ago and really liked over the edge but after then didn't listen to them much. Then early this year i saw the film rivers edge which had let me know in the soundtrack and got obsessed all over again.

I’d heard the Nirvana covers back in the 90s but it wasn’t until the other year that I checked out their catalogue. So glad I did!
I have the first 4 albums and love them all. Land of the Lost might be my overall favorite; “The Search” has been stuck in my ear recently.

Yeah land of the lost is probably my favourite, every song is near perfect. I also have a thing for albums with less than 10 tracks, something about the minimalism of it makes the brain worms happy.

Re: Greg Sage/Wipers...wow
It sure was a "wow" moment for me discovering the Wipers. I like the "Is This Real?" album the most, because it's the most poignant one but also seems to be best recorded / mixed one. I believe he outsourced the mixing on this one (eventually having a famous studio himself). With every album the sound quality gets better again, but eventually the music loses its more visceral sound (as with a lot of people getting older ).
Fun fact, I always wondered what modulation pedal he (clearly) uses on some songs. Then I saw a live recording he just uses the whammy bar on his P90 laden SG on every 4th so it sounds like a continuous effect.

Re: Greg Sage/Wipers...wow
I believe on "Is This Real?" they used an outside produce and mixer, and Greg Sage was unhappy with the mix, and then he served as the producer and mixer.
I am not going to say that he did a bad job, but there's a reason why it can be a good idea to have an outside person handle these things.
"Is This Real?" sounds crisp and great. It's a wonderful sounding record.

Re: Greg Sage/Wipers...wow
Exact same story here. I knew the Wipers were a band, knew Kurt was a fan and heard the covers, but never looked into it beyond that. About a year ago Spotify Discover started serving up Wipers songs from "Is This Real?" and at some point I started digging in on my own. I hate that it took me so long to get around to it, but then again, it's always nice to find new old music, too.Jazzmackster wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 4:46 pmI’d heard the Nirvana covers back in the 90s but it wasn’t until the other year that I checked out their catalogue. Let me take it back... I listened to "Is This Real?" tonight, and man, those drums are mixed way too low.

I like a few songs from is this real but as a whole record i've not quite "got" it yet. I feel that the ones that sage produced himself sound more esoteric which i like.

Great band. It's cool that Greg has used one guitar and one amp for his entire career. I respect that.

Re: Greg Sage/Wipers...wow
honestly, greg sage is part of the reason i wish i liked SG's more. when i was 16, i even got a batwing SG and stuck a bigsby on it because of him but i just never liked them
