Let's hope it's the end, if only so that Robert Smith might claw back some dignity instead of putting on the warpaint while old and fat. The pictures I've seen of him for the last 15 years make KISS's endless makeup and money touring seem tame by comparison.
This is an excellent rectangle

The Cure live were never the same band again after Robert Smith decided to not play the Bass VI parts of the songs on a Bass VI but his strange Schecter guitars. To me, that was when the most important band member left the band - the Bass VI. Or is that just me?

This is one I struggle with. I don't like it when bands kick into legacy mode and just tour old songs, but it seems like it's hard to avoid that fate. Say what you want about U2, but they're like the rare top tier band that dodged that bullet until only recently. I have no desire to sit through a three hour show, but maybe Robert Smith just likes to get out there and play his songs? Gallup, the drummer and the keyboard dude have been in the band for quite some time, so who are the hired guns outside of Reeves Gabrels?
It hard..I was a huge fan. The Cure were untouchable for a ten year period. Disintegration really did happen...as soon as they fired Tolhurst after the recording of that album. I still persevered..I went to the wild mood swing tour where the halls were almost empty, sat through the excruciatingly boring Bloodflowers show...I knew id never pay to see them again...but then I got an invite to the 4tour thing with no keyboards..that was even worse...that was a very long 3 hours I can tell you.

Robert Smith does it because he just cant give it up..the adulation, I think he is frightened of the end coming....the others do it for money. Very sad to see.

I think he's more frightened of acknowledging that the end has long since come.

Smith really hasn’t aged well. So handsome in his youth. Always will be one of my biggest guitar heros. With that said, I saw them back in 2016. While I’m very glad I did, I can only imagine what it would have been like seeing them play in a club back in the 80s. Their 2016 show was good, but was not impressed with Reeves as a guitar player. Seemed to just add too much cheese. It was kinda like he overcompensated on his use of flange and the amount of treble in the mix was ungodly terrible.

Smith was still playful and interacted with the audience. He actually botched the solo for “mint car”, but the coolest thing was that after the song ended, he performed the solo correctly without any other instruments as an apology. You can tell he still enjoys what he does and pleasing the fans is still where his heart is.

With that said he’s had a few collaborations with some new artists.ChVrches or whatever they’re called comes to mind. Not that they’re terrible, but it’s a step back for smith. The man can create some of the most amazing hooks and I wouldn’t mind to hear any new material from him.

It's a very valuable asset to be able to accept it's the end and it's time to let go and move on.

I think Smith should drop the current band & find new musicians. Having players like Boris & Porl probably helped shape the songs. Both are more creative than the current drummer & guitarist. Jason has been drumming for the Cure since WMS, but his beats are a bit boring in comparison & lack the dynamic/snap Boris had. Even when Lol was drumming the songs had a certain edginess to them.
What's Budgie up to these days? Maybe they can start Bobxsie & the Banshees.

Absolutely...Jason was a very poor choice, he literally murdered the songs for years and it's taken him 20 years to get better. And then you have Reeves Gabriels 'tapping' on cure songs :fp: ...The root of it is that Robert Smiths taste and judgement seems to have totally left him..thats why I don't hold out much hope of anything improving..no matter who he has alongside.

Budgie is actually doing something now with Lol Tolhurst..though I don't think anything has come out yet.

Budgie teaches in Berlin lasi I heard; a friend's son is being taught by him.

I met Boris once. We had a huge argument over whether or not Ringo Starr could play- he thought he couldn't- and honestly for me the only good drummer they've ever had was Lol. By far the most memorable drum beats are pre the Top. the band died when he stopped drumming as far as I'm concerned.

the cure were one of my last pre-pandemic shows– they were headlining a festival they'd organized and i didn't have any expectations having heard for years that they weren't great live anymore. it wasn't the most lively show i've ever seen (except Gallup, incidentally, who was full-on caged puma the whole set), but they sounded great and played some nice surprises, which i think is fine for a band with an average age of 60.

these guys decided to make a living at this (and are lucky enough to get to), and decided playing out was more important to them than continuing to write new music, and that might not be as interesting, but that's infinitely more respectable to me than a lot of other career choices.

and, jesus, fuck all this age and fat shaming. Robert Smith is clearly fine with being who he is (and has been for decades), so what does it matter to the rest of us?

I was refining my thoughts on this. As a 56 year old, gray haired fat white man who is considering working up a set tp play live again I find that kind of sentiment very discouraging.

I haven't been taking this as an indictment of old and fat people, mainly just that the makeup isn't working with the person that Smith is presently. Nor is the hair.

Frankly it's a distraction and an embarrassment.

There's nothing wrong with being an old guy, and there's a lot of pathways to dignity being an older guy and it's in no sense unattractive, either.

But not the way he's doing it.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.
