My son had a Weird Al phase. Gotta say I didn’t hate it.

Al Stewart?
Year Of The Cat is as amazing today as it was in 1976. :-*

I prefer Al Stewart's 24 PARROT album
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

Man I always thought Herb Alpert was cool. Have you heard ECC's mashup of By the Time I Get to Arizona with Whipped Cream?

I saw Weird Al at the SLC County fair and honestly it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Wasn't much of a fan before that but they really really killed it. Amazing band.

What counts as uncool these days? Who gets to decide what's cool. If I like it, then I think it's cool. I'd just be guessing what other people think isn't cool.

There's even a few banda songs I think are real bangers. Y llegaste tu by Banda El Recodo comes to mind. There was this song called La Revolcada by El Grupo Montez de Durango that all the gang members would blast from their low riders and astro vans when I was living in Chicago circa '01. With the huge subs from the cars it really boomed. Still listen to those from time to time.

Smash Mouth- Space Lounge was the first record I bought with my own money. I listened to it a lot.

A little later I bough Goldfinger's Hangups on the strength of "Superman"s appearance in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1. I do no apologize for that one. I maintain that album is a drum tight pop rock masterpiece with great songs.
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Brian Bennett is pretty cool. He did a lot of library music in the 70s, but he also went all out on some koooool space funk.

I have, and it's great.

Weird Al is another one. What's funny is that being parodied by him became a badge of honor, and at a certain point everyone just started being glad he's around and doing what he does. His career's peaked strangely late. Apparently his band is all the same people since 1983, and they just love working together and with him. Says a lot about him right there. Weird Al is as lovable as they come.

And I've been known to blast some Vicente Fernandez from time to time. I even like Japanese Enka quite a bit. both kind of obtuse to the american ear, mostly, but we like what we like.

I met Weird Al and recorded a casual interview (for these comedy archives oral history thing for Emerson College) and yes - it’s the same exact band! What an absolute sweetheart. I got into “In 3D” when it came out...

This is really hard because if it’s so uncool that makes it really cool right? I really like the extended deluxe boxset of the Sound of Music soundtrack, it has all the alternate takes and mixes.

My brother in law had a movie quality stormtrooper costume and was part of a "legion" that did appearances at children's hospital. He and his other stormtrooper buddies got to dance on stage at a weird Al show during his Star Wars American Pie spoof. I was jealous

My theory has always been that your real musical influences are the music you listened to before you had a choice--e.g., the records your parents had, or what was on the radio when you were very young. So, for me, that was Sonny and Cher and The Carpenters. And I do love harmonies, and a good melody...

I inherited a stack of LPs when my folks sold their house and downsized. They sat in the closet for years, and then I pulled out a couple of Sonny & Cher records--"The Beat Goes On" live album, and "All I Ever Need Is You". Wow, they were both really good!

Yeah, it's true about that. Those things make their way into our brains and do all kinds of stuff.

Love me some Carpenters, too.
