Artists covering entire albums
I've read that Fruit Bats have covered all of the Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" album, which got me wondering about other artists and bands who have done similar?
The Flaming Lips did a cover / re-imagining of Dark Side of the Moon, what else can you think of?

Ben Gibbard did a whole cover album of Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub.
I haven't heard it, but even die hard Gibbard fan friend of mine who gave it a listen sez it's el stinko. Duran Duran did a whole album of covers (and oh boy if you haven't heard it, you're missing out on the worst idea those guys ever had) but not a cover of a whole album.
I dunno, the concept is a little too "tribute band" for me, I guess?

X-TG (ex Throbbing Gristle minus P Orridge) Covered Nico's Desertshore which is one of my absolute favourite albums and a thousand foot tall ice fortress of an album that makes even her blackest winged contemporary rival look like Lulu. Nothing stamps on the neck of the sixties harder than Desertshore.
X-TG used different singers for each track (from Blixa Bargeld to Sasha Grey) and for me the highlight was Marc Almond singing The Falconer with IMO a career defining vocal performance.

Easy All-Stars did Radiodread.
OK Computer re-done in a rubbadub stylee. Not my cup of tea (and I love both Radiohead AND reggae).

Luther Wright & The Wrongs did a country version of Pink Floyd's The Wall. I like it.

Stephen Malkmus and his band did all of Ege Bamyasi and released it. Generally against the idea, but I can still enjoy it. As long as it's not Sgt Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon or something

El Michaels Affair (instrumental soul band) have an album and a half of just Wu-Tang Clan covers, neither is a track for track album cover, but they hit all of The Wu's best early tracks and some of the Wu members' solo works. I know that there aren't a lot of other hip-hop fans on here, but if you like old Soul music sounds give it a listen.

Re: Artists covering entire albums
I can't think of anything that interests me less than people doing this. Like, I'm sure the exercise of learning all the songs is rewarding on an individual level, but why bother to put it out instead of more of your own music? I just don't get it.
And you find out life isn't like that

Re: Artists covering entire albums
This is something I never thought I'd be into, but I'll be damned if I didn't find it completely charming and fun. My normal stance is it's pointless to try to recreate a note-for-note cover of someone else's song, especially an iconic one. I'd rather hear the artist's take on that material than some bad carbon copy. I can't explain why I love this so much, other than maybe pure nostalgia and a general love for the Smithereens.

PHish would cover an album (or a side of an album) for their Halloween show many years.
If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

Re: Artists covering entire albums
Not sure if anyone would be into it, but Beck’s Record Club covered various albums with many different, well known and respected indie artists participating...
From Wikipedia: The purpose of the project is to cover an entire album by another artist in one day, using an informal and fluid collective of musicians. Albums covered as of July 2010 are The Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico, Leonard Cohen's Songs of Leonard Cohen, Skip Spence's Oar, INXS's Kick, and Yanni's Yanni Live at the Acropolis. Video footage of every performance had been made available on Beck's website.

Boy, a whole lot of people covered Pet Sounds in its entirety. That seems to be a small industry.
