ok. so i'm kinda bringing this thread back from the dead with a question. what is the quintessential fugazi album? like with most bands you can usually say "oh this is the album to listen to" but with fugazi, i've always had trouble figuring out which it was. i've seen some say repeater, some say killtaker, some say red medicine and some say the argument.

Maybe I'm just old, but I feel like repeater is their canonical album. When I first got into them, kill taker had just come out and some of my fugazi friends hated it. "Great cop is the only good song on there". My favorite is end hits personally, but my experience is that repeater is the default fugazi album. I'm curious to hear what others think.

I'd say Repeater, too.
(I'd started to wander by their last couple albums, so take with a grain of salt).

Still kicking myself for missing / not hearing about "Ian's new band with ROS guys" every time I drive through Tacoma (1988, s/t ep era). Seattle was an all ages wasteland.

I agree that Repeater seems like the “signature” record. Seems like the one a new-to-Fugazi listener ought to start with. If I’m grabbing one to listen to, though, Killtaker is usually where I start… and then three albums later I’m like “I need to listen to some Curtis Mayfield to come down from Fugazi rage”.

I always point new listeners to 13 songs myself (I know, its 2 EP's, not an album). It has great songs and is IMO the most accessible.

My favorite is Kill Taker, with End hits a close second.

My take? Waiting Room is the Ur Fugazi track, Repeater the perfect, defining album. I still think back on how I got into them. Sonic Youth, then my obsession, was doing a benefit in DC and that's why I was there, circa 1990. Turns out there's an opening band so we gotta wait through that. Move close to the front of the stage and low and behold, it's Fugazi, a band that I'd never even heard of. Took my head off and have been a big fan ever since, although that was the sole time I ever saw them live.

That whole Dischord seen in DC was magic and better than that wretched city deserved.

Slightly off topic but, am I the only one who has goosebumps from Glue Man? I know it’s not the quintessence of Fugazi’s sound or ideas. It’s always been my favorite song of theirs, though. I guess I just have a soft spot for hypnotic 2-3 note melodies.

I rarely see it ranked very highly in their discography, but it's absolutely my personal favorite. Nice New Outfit is probably my overall favorite Fugazi track

there is a thematic consistency to steady diet, almost like a concept record. it is my favorite Fugazi record.

Red Medicine is my favorite. I feel like that’s where they really come into their own as a band. It’s like they finally allowed themselves to let go of being a punk band and got both weirder and more pop.

Bed For The Scraping is a just a monster of a song. I wish I could capture even a small fraction of that energy on a recording.

Red Medicine.
