Songs from Films

Post by shadowplay » Thu Feb 09, 2017 6:55 am

I'm generally thinking of songs written specifically for films or TV or songs first used in a film, not Wes Anderson's ipod on shuffle sort of thing. Though if you want to post songs in that vein feel free.

So my starters.

Recent;

Johnny Jewel - Tell Me (Featuring Saoirse Ronan) from Lost River.

Lisa Hannigan - Amhrán Na Farraige from Song of the Sea.

Cat's Eyes - Coat of Arms from The Duke of Burgundy IMO one of the very best modern soundtracks.

Natasha Khan & Jon Hopkins - Garden's Heart from How I Live Now

Old

Magnet - Willows Song from The Wicker Man IMO as good as it gets. NSFW a wee bit since it feature Britt Ekland's stunt bahookie.

Trio Junior and Ennio Morricone - Fruscio Di Foglie Verdi from Teorema

Jeff Alexander and Bonnie Beecher - Come Wander With Me from The Twilight Zone. As song that is IMO plum amazing.

Sandra Kerr & John Faulkner - The Princess Suite From Bagpuss The actual scene.

Sylvian & Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours From Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

Double dipping because I've posted this before, but Thorstein Bergman - Balladen om Kråkguldet from the Swedish film Kråkguldet haunts me, and the cover by AnnaMy :-* takes it to another plane.

And Goblin - Suspiria (/any and every Goblin giallo theme)

Can't beat a bit of Los Troubadours du Badouin/ mildly NSFW Noonan-on-McDowell action.

Pretty much all of The Wicker Man is a solid winner on the song front. I recently discovered Tam Lin with groovy Pentangle soundtrack. Bit of a turgid film, but it its period charms include a young Joanna Lumley and Ian McShane giving Terry Stamp a run for his money in '60s cool cat terms.

And this thread can't possibly NOT include this fab song from If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium!

Claudine Longet - Nothing to lose is quite nice too. I kind of miss those shoehorned-in cameos that were so prevalent back in the '60s.

In a similar vein, I'm a big fan of Freddie Phillips' music for Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green.

Loved the Duke of Burgundy soundtrack, and the film itself, too.

Yeah I love the music from Camberwick, I've even bought the records.

I'd bet you'd like the theme toDie Screaming Marianne by Kathe Green. Sadly it's never had a release of any kind but The Owl Service did a good cover,

Good call on The Ballad of Tam Lin and on Claudine Longet. It's funny you mentioned The Devil's Widow, we watched Ian McShane in Sitting Target with Oliver Reed from around the same time recently. it was like something from another world, you probably wouldn't want to be female in that circle.. It's not a song but the Stanley Myers theme is good. McShane is a bit of an odd character, back in the 70's he was out squiring Sylvia Kristel.

Here's another Morricone classic (with Christy) from Danger Diobolik; Deep Down

Funnily enough after posting I thought of Repo Man too. I had a false memory of The Circle Jerks performing Pablo Picasso in the yard where the 'plate o'shrimps' guy worked, but it turns out they're actually in a club doing one of their own songs.

Danger Diabolik is a great old-time fave of mine and watching an alternative Deep Down clip reminded me of Roman Coppola's CQ which has a fantastic soundtrack album.

Talking of '60s spies, I've always thought the incidental music in The Prisoner is some of the best TV music I've ever heard. Especially loved this tune which my friend had on a fanclub-only Six of One 7" disc.

Oh, and while we're about it, let's not forget Samantha's even sexier sister. A little guitar....a little atmosphere.... (A little better quality would be nice too.)

Ennio Morricone - Dies Irae Psichedelico I've never knowingly seen the film this is from, I only own the album but it's amazing stuff. Think Broadcast take Verdi to a psychedelic sexmass happening!

George Auric & Isla Cameron -O Willow Waly maximum folk spookiness from The Innocents. This is an expanded version of the song in the film. You can buy it as a seven or a file for 50p from Trunk

Isla Cameron also delivers a belting performance singing One Morning in May/The Bold Grenadier in Far from the Madding Crowd.

Albert Oehlen, Mayo Thompson - Disco Death from The Last of England

not sure if it counts since the following song is a cover version. But this specific version was performed in the film and obviously FOR the film...

I'm quite partial to Beck's version of Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes. (Because I love the film so much...?)

I'm quite partial to Nyman's work on Greenaway films, particularly the 1980s stuff where it sounds like he's unpacked Mozart, taken out all the non-essential notes and neatly folded it up again.
