Personally I only really listen to the radio for comedic value, such as Radio 4 (news and fun) and of course Chris Moyles.
None of the music on the radio is indie.

Not indie as in Independent label, but as in the new fangled genre of indie ie Deathcab for Cutie

No no no. You mean pop-rock.

Just another convenient "pigeon-hole".
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

This is something I rant about on a daily basis. I'll spare the board my thoughts for now.

6001 songs, 16.2 days, 29,97 GB

and pretty much all I do is listen to "loveless" ;)

I don't really download illegally either, but I have some stuff on there that was sent to my by friends.

I found that downloading music from torrents and all that gave me a short attention span for music - it turned me into a musical grazer - I never really listened to anything in any depth anymore, so  I cut it out.

??? But grazings goooooooood!!

Nah, just different I guess. I've been so bitter & twisted about alternative music becoming mainstream that I've missed out on a few fucking good bands that've been around for ages. I'm enjoying skimming the surface at the moment.

MMMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!  :)

I think the worst thing a music fan can do is get hung up on things like "mainstream" or genre pigeon-holing. Porky, I too went through the whole "I don't like it, because everyone else does" thing with a few bands, but it's just silly. Oddly enough, some good bands do get global recognition and end up as muzak in Matalan. It doesn't actually stop them being good, much as certain music snobs would have you believe otherwise.

I'm always quoting this book, because I love it, and it's one of the clearest and least pretentious books about pop music ever written - Nick Hornby's "31 Songs" (AKA "Songbook"). This is a good bit, where he talks about people who insist on listening to nothing but challenging or edgy or scary music:
I need no convincing that life is scary. I'm forty-four, and it has got quite scary enough already — I don't need anyone trying to jolt me out of my complacency. Friends have started to die of incurable diseases, leaving loved ones, in some cases young children, behind. My son has been diagnosed with a severe disability [autism], and I don't know what the future holds for him. And, of course, at any moment there is the possibility that some lunatic will fly a plane into my house, or a nuclear power plant....So let me find complacency and safety where I can, and please forgive me if I don’t want to hear "Frankie Teardrop" right now.
Insisting that all our art be "edgy" or "difficult" is a bit like saying that all sports except the extreme ones are pointless. It's a sign of how privileged we are, that we actively seek out danger in art or sport or theme parks. In times past, we would've been thought crazy for wanting to make ourselves uncomfortable....

I really love mainstream music. To be honest I just like good songs and appreciate the skill it takes to write a pop song.

I love All American Rejects, Blink 182, Kelly Clarkson as much as I love Merzbow and William Basinski.

I think real musicians never feel the need to insult other bands because they understand the talent of writing any style of music whether they like it or not. I think Fall Out Boy are a great band, write great hooks and songs but I don't listen to them.

+ 1

I love - and I mean love - some of Britney's work, and Christina Aguilera has had her moments. There is no irony in my love of half of Bryan Adams's "Reckless" album - I think it's great. I only really dislike cynicism in music marketing - dressing up something to look like something else (e.g. dressing The Feeling up to look like a rock band. They're a pop group, why don't the suits just let them be one? Ditto Maroon 5, who IMHO haven't written a decent song yet).

Liking something mainstream doesn't mean you have low standards.

I like a fair bit of mainstream music, I just can't stand people using 'Indie' in context with modern British music (Arctic Monkeys, Kooks, Razorlight, Jamie T etc etc).
