Hey, OSG.
My band The Laughing Group has a new EP out today. This is our first to be recorded and mixed by yours truly. Drums and main guitar were tracked at our practice space, with bass, vocals, and other overdubs at my home studio which I've dubbed 101 Strings. It's good old fashioned 3 piece indie rock. If you like stuff like Nada Surf, The Soft Boys, and electric Elliott Smith you may dig it.
It's available now on Bandcamp, and the usual streaming places including Apple Music and Spotify.
Offset-wise the primary guitar for all tracks was my blue sparkle Rhoney Oceana Jr plugged straight into my At Mars Specialist. My vintage XII made an appearance on some overdubs. There’s a little sprinkle of JM, but the overdubs are mostly Tele and Strat with my Tech 21 Liverpool and Neunaber Iconoclast. I also used my Euthymia Crucible fuzz quite a bit on overdub guitars for its sparkly cleanup.
Acoustics were my 1949 00-17 on the more shimmery parts and my 1977 Takamine F312 on the chunkier ones. Our bass player's MIJ Squier series Jazz was recorded direct with a little compression on the way in and an SVT-style amp sim in the box.
I went down to Portland to master with Gus Elg at Sky Onion Mastering, and he did an excellent job of preserving the raw DIY-ness of the recording while taming some of the wooly stuff. Easily the best mastering experience I have ever had.
If you like it, share it with a friend. We're going to be spending as close to $0 as possible promoting it.
