Ditto. One of those bands whose name I've seen cropping up over the years, of whom I've remained blissfully ignorant (though I may have heard them in passing without it registering).PorkyPrimeCut wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 9:55 amI'll admit to knowing absolutely nothing by them but my Facebook news feed is now full of friends expressing their deepest sadness. I just gave Things We Lost in the Fire a full listen. There's a really nice clarity & definition to it. Each member stands out but also blends perfectly in the mix. The vocals really compliment each other, I love how naked the guitars sound too. Every slide from note to note can be heard.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 11:00 amThere's such a fantastic back catalogue to look through...you have a lot of choice. My favourite LP is Things We Lost in the Fire (and is a great starting point right in the middle of, arguably, their best era) - it's beautifully recorded, full of ups and downs and switches effortlessly between truly hauntingly intimate and soaring, blossoming arrangements with strings. Secret Name is great, as is Ones and Sixes. In fact, there's very few duds, but they did ebb and flow through styles so you might find an album that resonates more for you.PorkyPrimeCut wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 9:55 amI'll admit to knowing absolutely nothing by them but my Facebook news feed is now full of friends expressing their deepest sadness. That last live clip was great!
The thing that really grabs though is how, every now & then, the rhythm section sounds like Slint. A very good thing.

Indeed, the clarity and sense of being in the same room as the band is something else on that record. It's a classic Steve Albini recording and it compliments Low wonderfully. I'll never tire of that album.PorkyPrimeCut wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2022 4:06 amI just gave Things We Lost in the Fire a full listen. There's a really nice clarity & definition to it. Re: Mimi has passed away.
That is sad news. Their music is up there with the most beautiful sounds I’ve ever listened to.
Should have gone to see them on the last tour- I bailed as the new album was hard going.
The back catalogue can be tricky to navigate. But it gets more rewarding with every moment of time you give the albums.

Deepest sympathies to Alan, to the band, and to the world at large.
What a loss.

So sad, I'm without words.
Glad I went to the effort to go and see them when they toured here a few years ago.

I put that in a playlist when it first came out. God, it's wonderful.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 9:38 amThis is the best version I ever found of this song and every Low fan deserves to hear it

I've listened to that YT video so many times. I think I first found it through OSG. Just haunting.

Coming back to this 6 months later. Still hard to listen to a lot of the Low records. Watching this tonight though. Some beautiful live renditions in there.

Re: Mimi has passed away.
I missed this thread when it popped up. Her death was the hardest I've been hit by the passing of a non-family member in a LONG time.
Low was my absolute favorite band in the late 90's/early 00's. I first saw them live in a record store in Tempe, AZ. They were touring behind Songs for a Dead Pilot, with some songs from the yet to be released Secret Name sprinkled in the set. It was amazing and I talked to Mimi after the show, she was the first musician that I really admired that I approached. She seemed exhausted and reserved, and I can't blame her. It was honestly nice to see that she was just a normal person tired from a long day's drive and playing a set.
I moved to Minneapolis in 2000 and stayed a couple years. I saw Low play at least a half dozen times. Usually in small clubs or art museums. This was during the Things we Lost in the Fire/Trust era. I managed to get a signed copy of their box set before Zach left the band and I sort of lost interest.
Even 6 months later, I'm moved to tears by the thought of her passing. Such a beautiful voice and approach to her drums.
