Roger Mayer

Post by stonevibe » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:49 am

What a week. I love the Bay.

I picked up a Roger Mayer Spitfire and a Voodoo Vibe for a song!!

I love his pedals and already own a Voodoo - 1 and one of his custom made Wah pedals in my arsenal of effects.

( Currently I own a Roger Mayer modded Dunlop Wah wah & a Dunlop Rotovibe, A Roger Mayer Voodoo-1, an 80s RAT pedal, a G2D Morpheus & a G2D Creamtone, Boss SD-1, DD-3, DS-2,DF-2,MZ-2,CS-3,HM-2 & BF-2, an original DOD Grunge, a Digitech Synth Wah and WH-1 Whammy, an 80's MXR Jimi Hendrix Fuzz, a reissue Fender Blender, H&K Warp Factor, 70s Electro Harmonix Small Stone and a Small Clone, Boss CE-1 and Roland Phase II, MXR 70s' script logo Phase 90, Marshall Guv'nor, Marshall DRP-1, Frantone Cream Puff, Ibanez FL301-DX Flanger and PT-909 Phaser, Radial Tonebone Classic, Ibanez Keeley modded TS9 and a Java Boost, ZVEX Fuzz Factory, Machine and Super Hard On.... Around 50/60 pedals in total but these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head...) phew!!!

Its the first time I have owned one of his rocket design pedals though and I am impressed with both the sound and the build quality of this thing. Cannot wait to get my paws on the Voodoo Vibe as I love those things.

I met Roger about ten years ago in Brighton when I worked in a guitar store there in the late 90s. I remember treading on his wife's foot was what got us talking in the first place, whoops!

How about a review of the voodoo-1 and the spitfire? I've always been curious about the Roger Mayer pedals, but I've never heard any of them in person.

Okay here goes

The Voodoo - 1 is a bit like my old RAT but tighter and with more 'sweet' spots.

It's a really useful distortion, classic but with a broader scope than say the RAT or a DS-1 i.e. not a one or two trick pony.

Your guitar will still sound like your guitar which is great, I tend to use it on single coil pickups most and can get from vintage type distortion up to Billy Corgan wig out type sounds from it! It sits really well with other pedals too.

The output gain on it is phenomenal and can hit the front end of a valve amp hard without even dialing in any distortion. Two outputs is handy too. Really quiet operation and built like a tank.

The Spitfire (bearing in mind I have had it fir 24hrs now)

Is really tight on the bottom end and more modern sounding than say a Big Muff and a lot less mushy.

It reacts beautifully to the Volume pot on my Strat and my JM, ~I haven't tried it out on my Les Pauls yet.

Again the output gain on this thing is insane before you even dial in any fuzz! I love the fact that it still gives really good articulation on chords and doesn't mush up like most fuzz pedals (and Lord knows I have a lot of fuzz pedals that do)

Lots of nice overtones and shades of fuzz can be achieved with subtle changes of your Vol and Tone controls which is what I love in a good fuzz.

Last but not least it looks awesome, Fire engine red, rocket shaped, two dials (well protected by the fins at the back) and not likely to flip over if not velcro'd down to a board or stage.

Both pedals are so well made and silent in operation. No nasty clicks or pops when you kick them in either.

Hope that helps.

The man designs good quality effects and is a nice bloke as well.

Can't wait to get my hands on the Voodoo Vibe hopefully tomorrow in the post....

My Voodoo Vibe turned up a few hours ago and it is just what the doctor ordered.

Very me.
