My favourite way of attaching effects to a board!

Post by JJ Gabor » Thu Nov 29, 2007 12:28 pm

OK, I have done this ever since i got a pedal case.  I hate the thought of taping Velcro to my effects and i also change the order of them frequently.  Also hair and dirt seem to stick to Velcro badly.

Here is my solution, I have been doing this regularly and even carry them on the bus, and they are always perfect when I get to rehearsal.

The key to this technique is using a pillow.  Use the one from your side, not your girlfriends or she will get pissed off ;)

Push the pillow in the lid of the pedalboard (this only works if your board is roughly the same size as your pillow - use a cushion otherwise)

Attach lid - you will probably find you can't shut it as the pillow is too thick.

Sit on it - fasten the clips and your ready to go.

I have found thin old pillows work best.  Nothing moves.  The massive pressure you put on the lid when you sit on it is distributed evenly by the pillow and won't damage your pedals.

Does no one else do this, or does anyone have any better tips?

JJ

I had a big piece of foam I got at a surplus store but it accomplished essentially the same thing.

I have actually done this a lot, too. I usually use old suitacases and generally they bow outward in the middle because it took so much pressure to fasten  ;D You can buy plain foam from arts and craft stores which works real well too. The "egg crate" kind with the little pyramid shapes that stick up works especially well.

Yeah, buying a piece of foam sounds like a good idea.

I think my girlfriend likes the idea better too. ;D

Nice idea :).  I hate having effects that dont fit on the board just floating around in the case, it waists time.

I actually screw mine down using offset washers, kind of like a chain link. Remove the 4 screws from the effects box bottom, re-screw with the washer in place, and then woodscrew to the board through the open link hole.
Admittedly, it's a pain in the ass if you're still rearranging your effects, but I'm pretty well set with mine, and they just stay on the two tier board indefinitely.
Unconventional, but I effing hate velcro.

The original Line 6 Red 4-Button stomp box (I think it was an amp simulator), shipped with 4 of those chain link style washers.

+1 on hating Velcro

I think if i was going to permanently arrange them I would use washers.  Starts to get tricky with pedals with bottom plates held on by there feet (Wah, Moogerfoogers etc).  I use different arrangements depending on who I am playing with and what i am playing.
