I am ironing out the kinks with my new Lehle switcher and some other things.
These things are really great. I dropped mine the other day and the middle button popped out. I just took it apart hoping I could fix it and it ended up being really easy, if a bit fiddly. *phew*

It's one of those things that seems really expensive and superfluous on paper, but in action it's all totally justified. I can't believe how much of a difference it made in my setup. Everything sounds and works so much better now. It was money well spent!

I was just giving the old Princeton a good workout and comparing a couple Fuzz Faces. The red one I rebuilt a long time ago while the blue one is stock. That Telecaster is one of my favorite guitars ever. It's just a Classic '50s lacquer with '55 Antiquities, Glendale steel/ brass saddles and some other odds and ends but I'll be damned if everything about it isn't just perfect for me. I have 9.5s on it right now, but it's getting a regular 9-42 set here shortly... and I have no shame! I believe this was the first time that I turned the Princeton's volume down from full up.

Yesterday's setup :

I still love my Jazzmaster but the treble makes my bandmates wince, I think they prefer when I'm bringing humbuckers :D

You need to do what I did. I put 250k volume and tone pots in the lead circuit and for the traditional bright sound I made the rhythm section a 1 Meg volume for each pick-up on the roller knobs. Most versatile instrument I’ve ever had.

Crappy studio pic time. Just got home from the last of 3 days at Hall of Justice (originally Reciprocal Recording where Nirvana recorded Bleach). It was later taken over by Fleet Foxes and then by Chris Walla ex of Death Cab for Cutie. It's a relatively small place. There's just the live room and the control room, and a dedicated amp iso room. My amp ended up the bathroom for basic tracks, but everything was ultimately replaced except for the drums. Once basic tracks were done we moved into the control room and got patched into the amps in the live room.

Setup for basic tracks. This is just my live board in all its messy glory. I think I used everything on here at one point or another in the process except for the Rat where I used my big box running on a battery instead. I will recable it when I get my new VP... or not. Frankly after this studio experience I'm not sure how much I care about making my board pretty. It just needs to pass signal and work.
Image

Amp Town. Bandmate's Supro on the left, my Swart AST and At Mars Specialist Filmosound conversion (in black) in the middle. The little Supro and 2x10 on the right are the studio's. There was an Acme Lulu head in the control room pushing the 2x10. The engineer brought out a JC-120 to try at one point, but it didn't work for the track (he and I agreed it was too crispy clean), so back it went.
Image

Pedal Mess for overdubs. Mostly stuff I brought plus a few of the studio's. I wish I had grabbed a pic of engineer's Space Echo which contributed some dirt and delightful weirdness. One of the cooler sounds was my bandmate's Boneshaker hitting the Space Echo. The studio also has AKG BX10 and BX20 spring reverbs which got printed on some tracks. There was a lot of patching things quickly on the fly. Everything in the pile got used at one point or another except for the studio's CE-2. It just didn't seem necessary with the doubletracking I was doing.
Image

Here's a shitty pic of my bandmate's basses. He also played the studio's CAR Competition Mustang Bass on a track which I stupidly didn't get a picture of. He used the studio's little 15W Ashdown running into a load box for basic tracks. Final tracks were reamped (taken from the DI) and tweaked for tone based on the bass used and overall sound of the song,

Wish I would have taken some more guitar pics, but we were working REALLY fast. What was supposed to be a 4 song EP turned into 5 songs because we knocked the basics out so fast, and we recorded a truly silly number of guitar tracks. I mainly used my Road Worn JM with Sunday pickups, the studio's (i.e. Chris's) Fano Starcaster with Filtertrons(?), and my Nocaster with a sprinkling of acoustic and lap steel. My bandmate mainly played his RI Starcaster or the Fano, so it's a pretty offset-heavy recording. No Strats or Les Pauls were harmed. :)

That's really cool to see the process!!! And you actually got to meet and work with Chris Walla? My fiancee and I both love Death Cab For Cutie.

We did not get to meet Chris, unfortunately. He lives in Norway now. I like the Nada Surf stuff he worked on particularly.

He has a few house engineers that maintain the place, assist on bigger sessions, and work with lesser-known folks like us. The guy we worked with Sam was really great. I would hire him for everything if I could.

Tell me about the At Mars amp- they've piqued my interest for a few years now.

Really like it.

It complements an Oceana Jr. perfectly. Just saying.

I play guitar in two pretty different bands that share a practice space. Space limitations have forced me to choose one amp to keep there and I chose the Swart which is the more versatile of the two, but it’s not as snarly.

Was also wondering this, massive Deathcab fan. Always wanted to visit the Hall of Justice after seeing the live videos to promote the Narrow Stairs record.
