Maybe someone should start building a pedal with a Rat and a Big muff in the same box and name it something like the KING OF FUCKING TONE
I'm not quite there in my building skills, but it's on the list.

Maybe I can do switching jacks for a send/receive, just in case.

Oh god, I accidentally just bought a BF-2 :fp:

At least I can compare to the Eno when it arrives.

Only the digital delay to go, then that’s the whole board sorted.

MS-3 on eBay. And I learnt about Rat into Muff. What a week to be alive.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

My maaaaaan!

Yeah, compare the two, then toss the one you don't like next to a mini-Rat w/Turbo on a table coaster.

Boom. "Classic '90s bass board".

I, for one, find the particular purple of the BF-2 to be one of the most delicious looking Boss pedals.

Whoever heard of a snozzberry?

I think I’ve actually got a Little Bear rat attack (with added boost mod) knocking about: 2nd board is already building itself.

Tasty Boss options are the PS-2 and PS-3, which give you DD and pitch shifting - for more chorusy/vibey goodness (+ insane aleatoric waterfalls of pitch in the case of the PS-3) - in a single enclosure. Then there's the DSD-1 (?) too - digidelay with lo-fi sampling for momentary loop madness, should the mood take you.

Not exactly budget but the Memory Man with Hazarai is a cool digital delay. Cool AND relatively budget would be the Nux Time Core that they now call a "Time Core Deluxe".

There are some cool ideas here- I’ve played with a boss PS & it’s pretty fun/simple/versatile.

And always loved the memory boy.

I’m adding them to the “upgrades” list.

Got my eyes on a Tc Electronic Flashback mini for less than £30. Their ‘2290’ digital delay is a perfect one sound pony that I’m looking for.

These were waiting for me at the office today ;D

Tremolo will be here soon, and keeping an eye out for a bargain digital delay.

Great choices so far. The BF-2 is incredible. When I tried mine out for the first time I expected it to do the swoosh and maybe a bit Nirvana. After few minutes I was like "alright, just gimme three of those and I'll never look into modulation pedals again..."

Oh hell yeah!

Have fun, that's a heap of sound right there. And I'm with Zork, a good flanger like the BF-2 showed me the light, it's all the modulation I ever need anymore.

It was rare for a ‘90s shoegaze or dream pop board to not have a BF-2. Almost everyone used one.

It's so true. I was just a few years too young and a few dollars too broke to be a legit shoegazer until the late 90s, early 2000s. When I got a BF-2, it was like, "Ohhhhh, I get it now."

Easy to forget in the era of boutique how most of the innovators of that shoegaze era were using mostly off-the-rack stuff from the '80s - i.e. shred machines. It's just all recombinations of Rats and BF-2s and Yamaha/Alesis reverbs (because reverb PEDALS weren't a thing 'til '87!). Maybe the occasional "old junk" like a Big Muff or Fuzz Face.

But so many of those elements are so versatile, it's all in the application sometimes.

Ok! I’ve lost my tuner, but that doesn’t matter right now. Hooked it up quickly with whatever cables I had lying around.

Image

Little soundclip with middle pickup & flat clean channel on the amp. Everything on ;D

Google drive audio clip

The BF-2 is really subtle, are all models like that? Like even everything full isn’t mental.

But it sounds creamy & ott & even the analogue delay has plenty of length for me to do more than what I want.

Super happy. Thanks for all the advice!!!
