Oh, well, that IS interesting. Very Very interesting
Along those lines, Darkglass Electronics makes a ton of bass-centric pedals, some that emulate the the era of amplifier you're after.

How small a box??

On a more serious note, though, a very common way of "pedalizing" amp preamps is replacing the 12AX7 triodes with FETs in a circuit. So you could very easily build or have built for you a solid state Bassman preamp pedal. You could also build or have built for you a proper valve version of the preamp in a bit bigger of a box (the Alembic F-2B is an example of this). There are caveats to all that though. One is that part of the sound of the real thing comes from the stuff AFTER the preamp. The phase inverter, negative feedback, output tubes etc all have effects that the preamp alone wont capture. The other is consider what you're playing it through. Is it an amp with its own preamp? Stacking preamps is gonna color stuff a lot and you'll never get the same sound. If its some sort of slave or power amp....then maybe you'll get closer.

I mean, a BF Bassman isn't exactly a big amp anyway. What I'm thinking is something I can put on a Pedaltrain Nano along with something like a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 170 or little Quilter (something very clean, flat and loud enough... any generic poweramp really) and throw into a backpack

If I could find a backpack-size solution to my 1967 AB165 Bassman set to Volume 7, Treble 5, Bass 3 on the normal channel I'd be a happy chappy.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Ah, so you will have backline cabs available.

I’ve used my Darkglass Vintage Microtubes on guitar a few times. It adds a pretty satisfying heft to the sound. A little too hefty for me in fact. Very cool pedal though, and I love it on bass.

As a former black panel Bassman owner and current Tech 21 Blonde owner those sounds are not really in the Blonde IMO. It does pair nicely with a Rat though.

What's your budget for this?

The Fractal FM3 will do as convincing a Bassman as anything out there, and probably replace your pedal board while it's at it, too, but it's less compact than some options.

It's got the exact same tones available as my AxeFX 3, and that includes the AB165 Bassman (both Normal and Bass channels, separately modeled).

Word. I'd just build a fet version of the real circuit and call it a day.

I don't really worry about budget when it comes to things I need/want but, I can tell you now, that anything that involves a screen or menu is going to last exactly 17 seconds with me.

Sounds like a man who knows how as long as the right amount of bills were fired his way

Tony's going to build an FET-based version for me to try. Full report to come in a few weeks when it's done and tested ;D

Nice.

Still going to bring your in-ear setup for these kinds of shows?

I’ve often thought about integrating direct guitar and in-ear monitoring in a simple setup.

That's exactly what Sushi Box FX specializes in, fitting (mostly bass) preamp pedals with a single valve into 125-sized enclosures and those with two valves into 1590 enclosures. I can say first hand that his Alembic F-2B based "Finally" and Ampeg B-15N based "Slampegg" are great!
I remember that he's working on a Bassman version too, but that's just one of several in-development models that are currently in a half-built state :D

Yeah, I'm likely to take the in-ears everywhere I can...those have been life changing

I tested it by plugging it in to the power-amp in on a Sunn Beta and it definitely rips.
