Best Magnatone Vibrato pedal?

Post by garyfanclub » Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:08 am

Surfyvibe? Magnavibe?

I need a little wobble in my life, harmonic trem's just not doing it for me. What say ye?

The Bigfoot FX Magnavibe would be my first port of call - love the sound of that unit.

Another possibility could be the Memphis from Crazy Tube Circuits. Not only does it do the harmonic vibrato, but I think it's also got some preamping going on for some extra colour.

To my ears, having owned a Magnatone with that beautiful vibrato AND a Bigfoot MagnaVibe, I'd say that's the pedal to get for the sound.

Thanks guys, went with the Magnavibe! Sounds excellent, and Jered was ab absolute pleasure to deal with. Love love love how subtle it gets!

That is great to hear! I thank you for this thread. I guess I’m a “tremahoardic” because I have six trem pedals. I immediately purchased the Magnavibe because it’s not too expensive. It arrived a few days ago but I’ve been werkin too much to try it. Then, this was posted:

A $450 trem pedal!!??? That looks insane. I want it but can’t justify that expense right now… mostly.

I just wish these trem pedal manufacturers made stereo versions (2-channel to be precise).

Nice, I think you'll enjoy it! I realized that having a trem on my board was a bit superfluous as my main gigging amps already have trem (and verb), so vibrato was a logical choice. The shallow water can handle the more "out there" stuff while the Magnavibe adds a subtle wobble.

That said I *did* have my eye on the Surfy Trem - never say never!

Weirdly I found one for a good price on CL here in New Orleans! After a few days I grabbed it. It’s pretty good but the freq range goes too far into the bass, which gives it a very ehrm, queasiness to it. I also have the Spaceman Delta II trem and that one is just lovely except for the (perceived) volume drop. If it weren’t for the volume drop that would be a wonderful pedal.

I really want to hear that Origin, but instead I may be shelling out some bigger bux on a tube harmonic trem pedal.

Not really, the “$450 trem” is this one - the Deluxe 61 lol

https://origineffects.com/product/deluxe61/

They are both analog amp in a boxes, so you cant use the vibe/trem parts alone without activating the amp section as they are meant to recreate the amps feel etc.

One trick the deluxe 61 has though is that it is a bias trem, so it kind of “ducks” out the way the harder you dig in so the trem is really reactive to dynamics.

Really would like to test one out, I loaned my friends revival drive and I can’t think of any other pedal so finely and solidly made.

Ah, thanks for the correction - a $460 pedal! I don't get how they say the brown deluxe has the best tremolo? Isn't it just a bias vary trem like all the BF and SF amps had? Also I have no use for drive so I guess I can skip that one.

Hey I tried the Magnavibe out last night with the 62 Bassman and it is awesome!! It's got a certain "fizzely" tone to it that does not exist in any Fender trem I've heard. Almost like a phase or flange, but not intense like either one of those. I like it on the slowest and least intense setting for a little ethereal tone, then faster and more intense for that feeling of swimming through the notes. That high end fizz is subtle, but absolutely gives it a "fresh" or "watery" kinda sound, like how waves splash with a great bass and a high end splash. I really like it! Is that the special thing about Magnavox trem? I've never heard one in real life.

However, I'm now going to get a Milkman tube harmonic trem pedal and be done with all my tremsearching for now. Until I can get a stereo tube unit built haha!

Bias vary was only on smaller BF and SF amps - nothing larger than Princetons I think. Any amps large than that got photocell tremolo. I find photocell to be choppier at higher intensities and maybe not as warm as bias vary.

Ah, copy that. I appreciate the info, I always get confused about those. At any rate, it is not the 2 1/2 tube harmonic tremolo that in my opinion is the superstar of all Fender tremolos.

It isn't pitch shifting or as washy, but I love bias vary as it still retains the warm 'tubeyness' of the harmonic trem.

Interestingly, Koch amps in the Netherlands(?) builds an amp with harmonic trem and it apparently runs off of one tube, so it is scalable.
