Also this may be a dumb question, but do the different tape heads correspond to specific subdivisions? I imagine the answer is yes but I haven't seen it explained anywhere specifically.
Essentially, yes. The modes turn on and off combinations of the sequential playback heads, giving you different rhythmic options.
That's good to know. I wish it explained in the manual what those rhythmic options netted out to in actual note values, but I imagine it wouldn't take long to figure it out.

I'm having crazy nostalgic late 00's delay pangs with RE-202 and the DL4 mk II coming out.

I'd welcome the midi clock (looks peevishly at the Korg SDD-3000 which has midi but inexplicably not that). Bonus points for foot switches visually referencing the old Roland external switches.

I'm annoyed, however, that they didn't toss in a chorus (a la RE-301/501) in there beyond the wow & flutter controls.

It does sound different than my RE-201 ("better" in a sense, reverb = "less clanky/crappy", but there are various reverb types), but certainly a lot less fussy. (For true authenticity, they should have included a "scratchy" pots random noise generator).

This demo is great, but it kept getting interrupted by ads for "urban carry" hidden holsters for firearms (and the "report this ad" link didn't work!). Not the demo person's or boss's fault, but a harsh reminder of the outside world when I was trying to go to happy tape delay land.

what else do you do online that could possibly send this ad in your direction? ;D i watched that demo and kept getting this gross ad for an ear-wax remover :fp:

EDIT for obligatory on-topic comment: i can see picking up the RE-2 in the not-too-distant future. i've looked at the NUX offering for some time and it seems pretty impressive in and of itself, but i feel increasingly squishy about supporting even middle-tier knockoff brands like that. now that Boss has re-entered its own space, it seems hard to go elsewhere, at least for me

I completely agree, as my favorite people were 301/505 users, but with that USB-in on the back I HAVE to imagine there's gonna be a firmware update that adds that in somewhere down the line.

I think they’re leaving a little magic in the tank for a 501 pedal one day.

Yeah, funny how this topic is moving from other areas (clothing, for example); I'll pay more for the "heritage" brands (and innovators) over whatever knockoff brands, if given a choice.

That said, does Boss have a history of meaningful updates to pedals after release?

Only thing I can think of are the Eventide demo videos with the guy jamming on some slant-fret headless Steinberger monstrosity (which may be birds-eye or camouflage – I haven't been able to bring myself to look directly at the screen)

Dammit... I just finally upgraded to a Capistan a couple of months ago after owning an RE-20 for 15 years. for reasons of it being smaller and better. And now there's the RE-202. Which is even bigger, but if the demos are anything to go by, it's amazing, which is more important. Love the extra head, saturation and improved reverb. Presets are handy too. Also, it's pretty. I'd get the RE-2 as a practical alternative if it wasn't so expensive.

Curious to hear how they compare to the Nux pedals and the Capistan.

Also, here's Andy's comparison (apologies if it was posted already)

Having said that, the 201 sounds noticeably better than the 202 in that last video...

They sounded different, but I’m undecided which one i liked better.

I suspect that part of the difference was in the actual settings dialled in, and also Andy mostly used the ‘new’ setting on the 202, rather than ‘aged’ . When he briefly switched to ‘aged’ it sounded a lot more like the 201 to my ears. But i also would imagine that you will get significant variations between individual vintage 201 units, depending on their state of maintenance.

You're right, of course. I'm going to have to have some self-discipline and try this before buying though.

Very sensible! I’m struggling with the self-discipline on this one.

I must admit the aesthetics are really adding to the appeal for me, although I know that’s silly and superficial! In this era of fetishising over vintage effects, Boss have pulled off an absolute masterstroke with the pseudo CE-1 look.

My Korg SE-500 because it's at the juuuuuuuust right stage of wear, it's not getting touched until maintenance is absolutely necessary. A friend got one of the Echofix tape echoes and it's great but it's going to be a while before it sounds properly grungy.

Definitely wasn't expecting the 202. The extra fidelity and tweaks are appreciated, but at a glance it's getting up towards Strymon Volante money. That does the multi-head thing too, plus has the sound-on-sound looper which I'd dig for Frippertronics stuff. The 202 does have that always on preamp though which just sounds so 80s to me in a similar way that Echoplexes sound 70s. I dig that.

Idk if it’s been mentioned, but I’m loving that retro CE-1 type of enclosure. Great move from boss
