NPD - Lehle mono volume

Post by marqueemoon » Thu Nov 25, 2021 11:03 am

In the last 6 months or so I’ve become a heavy volume pedal user. I play in a band with both rootsy and spacey leanings and between swells and fake pedal steel stuff it’s a real go-to for me.

My trusty Ernie Ball was doing ok, but I happened to spy this in the used case at GC and curiosity took over. Even at a used price it took some scrimping to get the cash together, but finally took it home last week and played it with the band for the first time last night.

As an effect not much to say about this, but what I immediately noticed even when trying it in the store is how the high end is maintained throughout the whole sweep. This is generally a good thing, but means extra care is needed when doing swells as the attack of the note is more apparent at lower levels.

The onboard variable boost sounds good, but when cranked it results in a pretty pronounced “knee” in the sweep. For my purposes setting this at zero (unity gain) is going to work better.

The tuner out works well. I originally had my tuner first in the chain which I like to do when possible so I can tune accurately regardless of what effects are on, but there is no tone suck this way, and I can never accidentally mute myself (which I tend to do often).

Overall I’m pretty happy with this. It sounds good and works well. The size is nice too. Not huge, but not too small either. It’s also eliminated my paranoia about snapping a string mid-show.

Maybe I’ll post some pics when my board is less of a disaster.

Oh hell yes. I've got a Lehle volume (I think it's the Mono 90) and it made me love the company. They make really solid gear.

The D-Loop looks really cool. It would take more scrimping and reshuffling of the board though.

I’ve always heard good things bout this pedal and one other brand..Goodrich? Anyway, cool that you like it. My cheap Dunlop is doing the trick right now. Once it breaks I’ll get something better. Maybe this. Congrats!

It might be a Goodrich. There are a few brands that pedal steel players love: Goodrich and Hilton the foremost among them. There are some other nice ones too.

If you have a VP Jr. this might be up your alley, especially if you are handy with a soldering iron.

I’ve been curious about this volume pedal for a while. Really like what I have read about it and the Lehle company but I read one review where the user was complaining of a mechanical sound at the toe and heel settings. I’m not sure exactly what they meant but was curious if you hear/feel any of that? I was guessing maybe like a click or something in the extreme forward or back positions?

I think the whole works is made from bent steel, and the bottom portion of the enclosure is of course hollow to house the electronics.

There are pads made out of the same gum rubber-looking stuff as the top side under where the pedal makes contact in the fully up and fully down position.

So, yeah if you move it hard in either direction there is a mechanical “clonk” sound that does not transmit to the amp.

Why anyone would find this to be a serious problem is beyond me.
