On the hunt for a thing I’m not sure exists: pitch shifting

Watching demos on the HOG2 and it’s downtime function sounds flawless to me, but I haven’t been able to determine if it’s as wide reaching as I’d like. I’m curious if it or some other pedal exists that allows you to set your individual strings to specific notes, without actually having to tune them to said note.

So tuning down a few steps is still sequentially like standard. I wanna know if there’s a thing that would allow me to tune each open string to, say, AFDBGE, or AAFFGG. I assume some expensive guitar synth pedals but really I’ve no idea here

I’m pretty sure this requires a midi pickup, like a roland or fishman and whatever midi synth goes along with it. A pretty expensive prospect, but there are plenty of people who make good use of these things.

Yup, in order to differentiate each string and then be able to artificially transpose it to different notes you'll need a MIDI pickup and a system capable of doing it.

A Line6 Variax can do it along with the workbench software and they can be had for relatively cheap nowadays. I'd really like to try one out for that exact purpose but I keep buying synths all the time...

Yeah I’ve done some more reading and looks like this is way more of a synth-like concept than guitar. Might fuck around with the Variax thing and see what’s up.

This was like the one cool thing I thought might make that Gibson auto tuning system neat, just that it could remember tunings and shit, but never got one to really mess with it.

Whammy is fine for typical harmonies and up/down stuff but you can’t use it to fine tune anything or what I was talking about in the OP.

Oh the autotuning thing is cool as well. Can you buy it without a guitar attached to it? On the other hand you can do very unrealistic and crazy tunings with the Variax whereas the Gibson thing will need to stay in a certain range.

Yeah, I kinda cut my teeth posing on Sonic Youth stuff, and I kinda regret that now because I never really got very good, but tuning guitars to random notes or just six of the same note was cool, but all you gotta do is see them play live to realize that taking 10 guitars to a show is kind of a pain in the ass. It’d be amazing to just have a little switch with presets that would allow you to instantly have fucked up crazy variations in the pitch of each string.

Oh, man, the variax! I'd forgotten that was even a thing, but yeah! That's a pretty good solution. I remember Warmoth used to make bodies you could put your variax guts in, I wonder if they still do.

If the concept works for you, you could transplant the electronics in a better looking guitar. It seems like quite a lot of work, but possible.
