does anyone know where to find international 9V faces?

Post by noisepunk » Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:49 pm

so, i'm sure i'm not the only one who's noticed that audio-equipment manufacturers have started using plugs that have removable prong faces (name?), like so:

i'm not really sure how this benefits manufactures, but theoretically this should make it somewhat simpler for musicians to use their stuff in other parts of the world...only problem is only one device i own actually came with other plugs, and i can't for the life of me figure out where to buy them on their own (sans supply). obviously the power supplies themselves aren't expensive, but it seems a little wasteful to just buy a whole new unit when the original was designed to be adaptable.

...any ideas, guitar hive-mind?

You can also use the current adapter with a local-specific travel adapter. Not quite as elegant as the click in plug but better than buying an entirely new one. And they come in handy to have around for phones, computer etc

Bring a couple of US 4-way/6-way adaptors and fit UK plugs on them when you get here?

I'm sure this is obvious but, just in case, be careful to make sure you don't accidently plug something expecting 110v into our 230v outlets. Step down converters are cheaper than amp transformers :D
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

yeah, this wouldn't be awful– we have one already from a trip we made in 2017. this seemed a bit less fussy... but then, i also expected these adapter pieces would be easier to find.

absolutely! just looking for anything that uses a DC 9-12V transformer plug. the amp is getting a dedicated step-down transformer– that's the only US only electrical thing we'll be bringing for now.

Ah, didn't read that properly. The adaptor 'faces' seem like the kind of thing you might find on Aliexpress/Alibaba. Searching for anything specific on there can be tricky, though.

well, as per usual, i overthought this a bit.

i just contacted customer support at focusrite, and they'll be sending us UK and EU plugs for at least our interface and my behringer desktop synth.

so there you go–if anyone's planning on taking their synth or minimal recording rig on an international tour (or are just moving i suppose :-/ ), just ask customer support!

I got a set of 6-7 of those for international travel at REI. I think most places that sell computer equipment will carry them too.

was it just the adapter inserts, or a whole plug? good to know either way–we have a few things where a whole plug might make more sense, and an REI not far from us.

It’s a mini power strip with three 3-prong outlets and a USB charging port that comes with the adapter inserts. It has the typical UK, EU, and at least one I used in Argentina & Chile, but I just packed the adapters, not the strip.

Edit: it’s a Voltage Valet product, but I am not seeing it on their website. The converters and set of 6 adapters are there, but not the strip.

They're proprietary anyway aren't they?

Another idea (which may be terrible and/or flammable ): if all the downstream pedals can handle 220-240v, can you use a US power strip or multi outlet adapter with all US adapters with a UK plug adapter at the end?

i'd thought about that... not sure how awful an idea it would be.

thankfully, i didn't have room in my luggage for any power strips, so i won't have the option of doing something potentially stupid :P
